COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
"Formidable Beast". What better way to toast the fall than to have a bottle of this formidable, dual character brew. At first smooth with mellow overtones of sweet berry fruit, a bite of bitterness suddenly cuts through, long, deep and lingering. Brewed with Rye Malt, it is naturally "blood red" in colour. Unlike the mythical wolf-like creature said to roam the bleak moorland surrounding Newcastle, this is real, so consider yourself warned!

reggiedunlop (3726) - The dub c, Pennsylvania, USA - OCT 11, 2013
Pours a clear dark amber with a medium white head. Aroma has slightly boozy grass and earthiness. Flavor follows suit...boozy but not hot...stringent, earthy almost woody..underlying very faint caramel. Mouthfeel is light/medium with a dry boozy/woody finish. pretty much awful.

From the label description I was expecting an American-style red ale, but this is definitely an ESB. Not a bad one, and surprisingly flavorful given the low ABV, but I can't say that the rye malt reveals itself other than in color, nor do I pick up any of the fruit notes the label intimates. Overall, though, it's nice. B- ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
