The Cyclone Series’ first foray into barrel aged beers is nothing short of unique. With our rum distillery in the same building that we make our beer in, it only made sense we would choose to age a beer in rum, not whisky or bourbon, barrels. After over a year of testing and experimenting, we created an inky black porter to carefully age in our Thomas Tew Rum barrels. After just the right amount of aging, the resulting beer is a bold and roasted porter balanced with oak, butter, spice, and rum notes from the barrel aging process.

   AROMA 3/10   APPEARANCE 3/5   TASTE 1/10   PALATE 3/5   OVERALL 4/20

From back in 2011. Completely sour. Barrel character is weak and does not come thru. I don’t know what it is about rum barrels and infections but another one goes down.

Poured into a mug, the appearance was a dark amber/brown color with a finger’s worth of quickly dissipating semi-foamy head. Lace was sliding. The aroma had some milk chocolate, roast, marshmallow and alcohol. The flavor was sweet mainly through the prior mentioned aromas, roastiness was somewhat there, but super faint. Aftertaste was pretty boozy. Finish was boozy and sticky. The palate was between light and medium bodied with not much sessionability about it - that booziness seems to hit bit more than expected. Carbonation felt fine. Overall, that marshmallow in this combined with the booziness which the more I think about it, the more it seemed excessive.

Bottle. Wow. As a former RI resident I am ashamed of this. They should never have bottled this brew. A real disappointment.

Bottle shared by DrSilverworm. Pours a clear dark amber color with a small beige head. The aroma has some roasted malts, chocolate, with an off tart cherry and very little barrel at all. The flavor is much of the same with the addfition of more tart character snd some char. This was not a favorite.

Bottle @ home via a trade - can’t remember who sent it, but thanks. Pours a deep brown appearance with a small brown head. Cherry Cola, spicy rum, sour, carbonic, chocolate aroma that is kind of strange but kind of cool. Tangy, slightly acetic, cherry, caramel, chocolate flavor with a fair amount of tangy, tartness on the finish. The damn thing has an infection though it is still drinkable and interesting in its own right.

Bottle shared by Dr. Silverworm. Poured dark brown color with an average frothy brown head that mostly lasted with good lacing. Moderate roasted coffee and caramel malt aroma. Medium body with a smooth texture and flat carbonation. Medium dark sweet flavor with medium sweet finish of moderate duration. Solid beer.

Bottle to snifter (thanks DrSilverworm). Looks good; a semi- transparent caramel with off-white lacing. Smells semi-sweet and malty. Tastes like it smells with an average mouthfeel. A decent brew, but could have more barrel notes.

brokensail (16696) - Dublin, California, USA - APR 27, 2012
Dark brown in color with a tall off-white head. A terrible nose on this. Sour as can be with lots of lemon, acidic and acrid roast, and metal. A bit of char in there too. The flavor is pretty much the same story. Metallic and sour with tons of roast and char. No barrel character, or really much good porter flavor either.

12oz bottle courtesy of beerbill, pours a dark brown with ruby highlights. Smells of sour chocolate and alcohol, infected? Taste of infected chocolate, with alcohol and rum, some bitter coffee on the finish. I didn’t have high hopes for this but this is pretty awful.

Bottle shared by atom. Pours a light stained wood color with a small off white head. This is a porter? Tart apples in the aroma, slight roast coffee, and chocolate also show. Really just dominated by the green apple aroma. Infected? Strange flavor. Green apples, red grapes, cream, and some sugary notes. Really this just seems like an infected brown ale. Fairly thin, with a finish that ends abruptly. Looking at the description this is not at all inky, nor is it black. Bold, no. Roasted, slightly. Rum barrel presence, nope.
