From the German, meaning “March Beer” and dating back to fifteenth century Bavaria. The beer was brewed in late winter and then stored in caves packed with ice blocks cut from nearby ponds. The mouths of the caves were shaded by planting chestnut trees, ensuring the barrels a long, cool maturation through the warm months. These beers were the forerunners of the lagers we enjoy today (“lager” meaning “to store”). Nickel Brook Marzenbier is brewed with a blend of six European malts, and German hops. Dark red in colour, with a rich, yet refined body balanced by hop dryness. Who says they don’t make them like they used to?

Tap at The Phoenix. Deep amber pour with a thick tan head. The aroma is fairly bready and a little bit earthy. A touch of noble hoppiness and some nice lingering clean malt. Well-lagered with a very clean bitterness and a touch of nice fresh hoppiness. Fresh tasting brew.

Draught at DeSotos. Pours a deep orange-amber with an average size lasting frothy tan head. Nice lacing on the glass. Aroma of bready malt, lots of fruit, caramel, light hops and grain. Malty, fruity flavour with a light bitter finish. Average to medium bodied. Pretty good, not a favourite style but overall I liked it.

A reddish copper marzen with a thick mocha head. In aroma, sweet grassy malt with herbal hops and mineral notes. In mouth, a light watery nutty malt with grassy notes, lactic points, a bit infected. On tap at Arrow and Loon, July 18, 2012.

A hazed copper amber Marzen with a thin lacing off white head. In aroma, a lightly acidic malt wit some fruity esters, overwhelming the malt. In mouth, a sweetish malt with off flavours, acidity, nutty roasted notes, some astringency. Infected. On tap at Arrow and Loon, March 31, 2012.

I got this on draft in some bar in Hamilton... I just saw "Nickel Brook Red" and for some reason I thought I was ordering a Red Ale. After the shock of the initial sip, though, I was pleasantly surprised. For its style it’s good. Well balanced, tastes like Autumn, looks crispy. I could picture drinking this in Bavaria.

On draft at the Winking Judge Hamilton Ontario. Pours a darkish brown colour with a really thin tan head, that is ring within seconds. Aroma is malty. The taste is also roasted malt like chocolate and coffee.

Tap at Baker St Station. Malt and caramel aroma with some dried stone fruit. This was medium bodied, nicely carbonated, more of that caramel, a bit of acidity. Slight bitter, long lasting finish. This was really good.

Bottle from brewery. Suprisingly big malty flavour, with some maple notes, and a hoppy finish. A little on the sweet side for me, but nails the style fairly well. Wouldn’t be opposed to having this one again.

this one was a real nice seasonal by nickel brook. deep maroon colour with an off white head. the malt profile dominated the aroma and flavour but the was enough hopping to make the finish just slightly bitter. only 2 batches were made in its first year so samples may be hard to come by. one of the better beers from this brewery.
