COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Nickel Brook took some of the best Pinot Noir barrels from the Niagara wine region and tossed their Bolshevik Bastard Imperial Stout in it? I mean, what have they done to the soft oak and subtle, earthy fruit notes from the barrel? Their Imperial Stout has WAY too much chocolate, coffee and dark fruit flavours for the delicate notes imparted by the barrel-aging process. I dont know what they think theyre doing. So what if its delicious? Drink it today, or cellar it to enjoy later as it matures. A votre sant!

2015 vintage. Winey? Yup - an overoaked & sourish one at that. Bastard? Yup - 1/4 of the bottle erupted like a volcano onto the counter. This may have been a bad bottle or its simply better fresh but very disappointing. The strong wine and sour notes completely overwhelm characteristics of a typical stout characteristics. UPDATED: DEC 26, 2016 Fantastic brew. The red wine is very prominent but the beer is not too sweet and is still very smooth with a creamy mouth feel.

Aroma is dark cherry, curran, funk, and clove. Taste is roasted malts, cherry, pears, apples, red wine and light vinegar. Light tang and sour taste on finish. Appearance is a black body with a medium frothy head that retains very well.

Bottle (750 ml). Split 3-ways. Pitch black with a medium easy to revive brown head leaving some lacing. Intensely perfumy and that overshadow other flavors but still theres red wine, roasted malts, berries and chocolatey notes. Tasted is moderately sweet and mildly to moderately acidic. Medium body. Medium carbonation. Roasty but mostly berries and strong perfumy finish. Its fun and its bold but to me its just way too perfumy and unbalanced. It doesnt have the malt backbone to compensate. Still, its not bad at all.

jksipa (855) - Newmarket, Ontario, CANADA - MAR 9, 2016
Bottle from the LCBO. Opaque black with a small short lived dark tan head leaving some patchy lace. Nose is predominantly wine with notes of wood, coffee, chocolate, vanilla and cherries. Light sweet molasses supports some coffee bitterness and a moderate tartness. Mouth is medium+ and oily with a lingering tart finish and soft carbonation. Interesting but i dont think the wine barrels improve on the base stout.

UPDATED: MAR 21, 2016 2016/03/06 - Pours a near black with a foamy tan head that quickly reduces to a patchy film and leaves minimal lacing. Aroma is roast, chocolate, molasses, woody oak, dark fruits, tart notes and light funk. Taste is chocolate, roast, lightly tart dark fruits (cherries, cranberries and red grapes), a hint of funk, lots of red wine notes and light oak. Very musty. Mouthfeel is medium and oily with smooth carbonation and a drying, lightly acidic finish. Interesting, but I feel like the wine notes take over a little. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle from the source. Pours a super active almost torpedoing out of the bottle, black, thick khaki head that is clumpy after resting, good retention, lace clings to glass walls. Nose is very wine like obviously. Tastes sweet, malty, a little smoke, a little dry, not as tart as I was expecting.
