Berliner Weisse style sour ale brewed with lemongrass and ginger
Its name honoring our Somerville homebrewing roots, Somer Weisse began as our answer to a hot July without air conditioning. A few twists on the classic Berliner Weisse style led us to this quencher of thirst. Refreshing and tart, it sprinkles the tongue with the zesty flavors of lemongrass, ginger, and, most importantly, summertime. ABV 4.9%-6.2%

Excellent Berliner Weisse. Fizzy carbonation on a yellow pour. Aroma is lemon, citrus, light crackers. Very effervescent and refreshing. Flavor is similar with a nicely balanced tartness. Great beer.

Pours a hazy, bright pineapple juice color with a one finger white head that quickly settles into a thin, lasting ring. Sporadic spotty lacing left behind. Slight solvent/chemical-like aroma with strong spices. Lots of ginger, white pepper and lemon grass with some citric acidity and sourdough bread. The solvent chemical notes are really overbearing though overtaking the other notes. Wow, this beer has a crazy amount of harsh acetic acid! So much so, it destroys almost all of the other flavors. Very strong acetone/solvent chemical flavor completely overpowering everything else. There’s some sour lemon acidity and bready yeast as well but they are hard to pick up underneath all of the solvent/vinegar. Complete acetone bomb with harsh, rough solvency. Impossible to finish. All but one person at our tasting poured this down the drain(AKA Ryan’s stomach).

750 bottle traded to me by Willrunforbeer, bottle date of 9-30-3013. Thanks for the chance. No head on a hazy, gold/ yellow color. Aroma is light lactic acid, tart lemons, ginger root and musty basement yeast hints.

Tart lemon and musty yeast are dominant in the flavor. The mouthfeel is mellow with a low carbonation level. Lactic acid is also very mild with a slightly tart aftertaste. I’m glad the acid and ginger has mellowed with time. Wow, after two years this held up well and is rather highly drinkable.

(750ml bottle, Batch #12, bottled 7.8.13) Pours a hazy yellow body with a small white head. Aroma of lemongrass, tea, ginger, wheat, and yogurt. Flavor of lemongrass, wheat, lacto, and ginger.

Poured from a bottle dated 08/22/14. Aroma is dominated by the adjuncts. Lots of lemongrass and lighter ginger notes. Lemongrass adds nice citrus notes including lime. Medium light acidity and faint wheat. Pours a Slightly cloudy, pale yellow gold with a medium sized, medium thick, white head that recedes quickly to the edges and disappears. No lacing and faint legs. Flavor is fairly acidic with a strong citrus note including lots of orange, lemon and lime. Medium light lemongrass notes with a light ginger character. Low wheat notes and faint bitterness. Slight sweetness in the finish. Mouthfeel is medium light bodied with medium high carbonation. Low astringency and low alcohol warmth. Overall, a pretty tasty beer but you have to like lemongrass. Lots of citrus and the ginger notes are light and very much in the background. A bit too acidic. Better than I was expecting and I am liking these Night Shift Berliners more than I expected.

Draft during EBF weekend. Poured a thinner looking hazed yellow with a bubbly white head. Aroma of lemon pledge, woody, rotting fruit, cherry skins. Flavor is better than the aroma, fresh lemons, tonic, lemon pledge, wood notes. Medium to thinner body with softer carbonation. Solid beer.

On tap at the brewery: Pours hazy straw with a thin head. Aroma of citrus, light spice, and funk. Taste is very tart with some citrus, grass, and funk. Light to medium body, light carbonation, very soft on the palate. I like this one a lot.

bytemesis (8384) - Sunnyvale, California, USA - MAR 28, 2015
Bottle - thanks Brian! Pours hazy pale golden, large creamy white head, dissipates fairly quickly leaving not much really. Aroma is sour mash, wheat, lemon and ginger. Flavor is medium plus tart, lemon and ginger. Light body, high carbonation, almost a bit salty. Refreshing.
