Bottle. Thick dark black, tiny head. Deep, heady malts, some soy sauce on the nose. Velvety mouthfeel- not too thick or sticky. More of the same malt and soy sauce in the flavours, with some dark cherry in there too. Not bad.

It couldn’t be to bad as they described it. But it is. Cola flat, with no head, no matter how hard you try, aroma of molasses and carob, flavour of something vile and cloying, like the rinse water of an old empty can of ovaltine.

maekchu (3917) - Hirakata, JAPAN - SEP 21, 2016
Can bought in a souvenir shop along the Kurobe Alpine Route. Nose of thin dark sugar, prunes gone off. Dark brown color, no head. Thin dark fruit, brown sugar, herbs, candy, and nearly no hopping evident. Thin and fairly flat. Yuck. Not quite as bad as the "Original" beer, but please don’t go all the way up there just to get this one.

varanid99 (1218) - AUSTRALIA - APR 29, 2016
Murky deep brown pour with little to no head. Caramel, slightly burnt, a little rubber on the nose. Taste is sweet, burnt sugar, a little nutty. Slightly weird chemical taste on the back end that I don’t love

GoufCustom (2007) - HONG KONG - JAN 7, 2016

310 ml bottle bought at bought at Globalist Ltd’s booth during the 13th Hong Kong Food Festival 2015 in HKCEC, Wan Chai.

Clear Cola blackish brown colour with a thick layer of dirt-like yeast sediments; Near zero head and residual soapy beige foam which fades in 5 seconds; Poor sticky lacing and very slight carbonation; Fragrant and sweet aroma of dark malt, with strong light roastyness, banana (!), sugar, light black coffee, cream, caramel, toffee, light chocolate, alcohol, yeast, thin lemon and very light grass; Light sweet taste of dark malt, with moderate roastyness, nuts, coffee ground, light caramel, light rubber, burnt toast, molasses notes, strong yeast, lemon, quite strong bitter hops and strawy grass; Light body. Watery palate; Mouth feel is quite strong roasted, fair dark maltyness in a very thin background. Chemy light rubber lurks, and coffee ground and bad yeast make unpleasant drinking. The burnt toast in this case is not really likeable, either. Pretty poor!... Hoppiness is thin lemon and very light grass in nose, and stronger and more strawy in taste. Bitterness is very strong and extract-like for a lasting, high astringent burnt malty finish; Fairly dry after taste; Bad-yeasty and very bitter to mouth.

Comments: My oh my what’s wrong with these guy’s yeast? They taste like mosh pits and I didn’t even pour it into the grass . The beer itself isn’t that good either, with estery and bad booze smell, quite rubbery and awful coffee ground taste, plus bad burnt toast bitterness. This could have been an inventive Schwarz, if not for its production faults. Stay sway!

Pours black with a small brown head. Aroma is terrible, Taste not any better. Not sure what happened here

Bottle 330ml (AIH40)
Dark brown color, beige head. Licorice, milky, toasted aroma, slightly medicinal. Light to medium-bodied. Licorice, toasted malts, medicinal in a good way. Some bitterness in the finish. Excellent palate for this ABV. Schwarzbier with lots of taste, probably not a lager.

oh6gdx (26488) - Vasa, FINLAND - NOV 20, 2014
[email protected] Brown colour, small beigeish brown head. Aroma is mild nuts, some smoked wet wood, mild rye as well as some liquorice to it. Flavour is mild roasted notes, some toffee, ashes as well as some mild metallic notes. Mellow bitterness to it as well. Rather dry wooden notes. Pleasant, and surprisingly bodied brew.

GenkiGonzo (1092) - Kyoto, JAPAN - OCT 22, 2014
Bottle from Yamaoka. Black with small, tan head. Malty, dark fruit aroma. Flavour is malty with some soy sauce.

KansaiBeerLvrs (5158) - Kyoto, JAPAN - JAN 25, 2014
Bottle from Yamaoka, 4.5% Schwarzbier served in a beer mug. Inky black pour with a good 2 fingers of tan foam that dissipates fast leaving behind no lacing. Looks more like a stout than a schwarz to me. Umami, soy & licorice nose. Body is light to medium, this thing oozes candy black licorice flavor with a surprisingly nutty bitter slightly ascerbic finish. Not for me as I dislike dark licorice. My wife liked it. Once it warmed up some coffee came through and fudge like notes though for me it never really gels.
