This beer has its orgin in the Bavarian beer type ’festbier’ or ’oktoberfestbier’. Like ’festbier’ and ’vienna style beer’, Nils Oscar Kalasöl is of a somewhat darker type. The Nils Oscar Kalasöl is produced with both münchenermalt, dark caramelmalt, chocolatmalt and some roasted barley. The choice of hops is a mix of four kinds where the most characteristic are brittish fuggles, american cascade and czech saaz.
Kalasöl is a rounded beer with a mildly roasted breadish character. It can be recommended together with heavy foods, like joints of roast meat, spicy stews, broiled meat and fowl.

Light amber with a off-white head. Clean, fresh malt flavours of light caramel, toffee and bread, also some light spicy and citrusy hop notes providing a fresh counterpart. A very nice vienna.

Pours a pure, copper color. Very little head. Aroma is delicate, but vibrant. Very malty and grainy, with a hint of spiciness, I am guessing that is from the rye. Slight hop component on the finish. Immenently drinkable.

Bottle from Systembolaget. Amber color with a small white head. Aroma of malt, caramel, slightly citrusy and grassy hops. Flavour is sweet and malty with some bitter, grassy hops att the end. Medium body, slightly thin texture and average carbonation with a decent bitter finish. Overall a nice lager.

Light roastiness in aroma along with some hops and a touch of nuttiness. A bit sweet, the roasty malts give way to nice minty hops. A pleasant surprice as Nils Oscar had a string of disappointments with me.

Bottle. Light amber colour with mostly diminishing off-white head. Malt, hops and some corn in the aroma. Flavor add green hops and a hint of caramel. Average finish - primarily hoppy. Well made Vienna.

chronictonic (472) - Oreland, Pennsylvania, USA - MAY 26, 2008
Toasty, crisp - some nuttiness. Some notes of rye in the finish, though very subtle. This was probably the best of the 4 Nils Oscar beers we tried tonight (IPA, Imp. Stout, Bwine and this).

Bottle shared by akevitt. Pours a hazy, orange-amber body with a light brown foam head. Aroma of caramel malts, bread, and spices along with a hint of floral hops and maybe prunes. Aroma is much better than the flavor, which is pretty one-dimensional and mainly bread/caramel malts. Very watery on the palate. Finishes clean with a slight burnt malt and coffee finish.

beermouth (435) - Langeskov, DENMARK - FEB 5, 2007
Slight hazy, golden brown with a fine white head. Citrus, malt, spice caramel and slight toasted. A sweet maltyness is very nicely balnced with a hint of bitterness. Very pleasent.

As always with Nils Oscar, this is a good beer. Deep colour. Distinct bitterness but definitely malt dominated. Perhaps a little too sweet for my liking, but I believe that’s a feature of the style, not an imbalance in this beer.
