Cloudy dark amber with tiny off white head. Sweet and slightly sour aroma with roasted malt and caramel notes. Same goes for the flavor. alexsdad06 (10436) - West Chester, Ohio, USA - JAN 22, 2011
12 oz.bottle courtesy of daknole. Pours a clear brown color with the small beige head. The aroma has roasted malt, mild dark fruits, a light nuttiness and light toffee. The flavor has an upfront nutty character, roasted malt, caramel, and some alcohol. The finish is dry with moderate bitterness. Medium plus body. jercraigs (10374) - Toronto, Ontario, CANADA - JUL 5, 2006
It has got a monkey on it, it has to be good right? Ruby brown body, small tan head. Sweet fruity booze in the aroma hints at brown sugar with a very muted roast malt touch. Lightly roasty acidity dominates my flavour impression over the muted malt. It’s a touch light and a bit flat, it feels like maybe they were trying to make it cask like. Interesting but not for me today. [8%? Wow! I did not taste that at all!] Thanks for the rarity MDS! phaleslu (10277) - Cincinnati, Ohio, USA - MAR 30, 2014
12 oz. bottle from Total Wine in Phoenix. Notes of tobacco, nuts, toasted, chocolate, and amber malts, and earth. Light-medium bodied, with moderate carbonation and an earthy, malty mouthfeel. Decent English ale. marcus (10232) - Sacramento, California, USA - JAN 27, 2008
This cloudy brown ale poured with a thin tan head that quickly disappeared. There is an acidic aroma. The flavor is of smoky malt, caramel and candy sugar with a chalky slightly bitter finish. It’s fairly well-balanced, but a bit thin.

Pours red/dark brown with an off white head. Aroma is sweet, and taste is malty with a bit of sweet candy taste. Alcohol is hidden well, and the flavor is very solid. Not bad! 3fourths (9347) - Boulder, Colorado, USA - JAN 15, 2009
Bottle. Full bodied, malt-driven, plum, tobacco, caramel, toffee, moderately bitter, appropriately full, hefty, chewy and resinous. I like. bb (9311) - Alamo, California, USA - JUL 11, 2013
Draft, Rich amber beer with a cream head. Cocoa and malt aroma. Malt and caramel flavor with light cocoa. Medium bodied. Malt and caramel lingers with light cocoa. drowland (8766) - Georgia, USA - JAN 19, 2013
1/19/13. 12oz bottle from 5 Points in Valdosta. Brown pour, lots of red under the light, with a small tan head that fades to a small ring and barely laces. Dark fruits, burnt caramel, and a touch of oxidation in the aroma. Rich maltiness with sweet, dark fruits, caramel, and some oxidation, but it’s not unwelcome. Not bad. Courtesy of gunhaver. Pours deep copper with thin tan head. The aroma is thick with malts, rich cherries and some solid roastiness. The taste has a load of thick rich roasted malts moving into mild pine hops that become increasingly bitter to midway. I’m getting very little in the way of barleywine notes. It ends with some dryness, fading pine hop bitterness and roasted malts.
