Interesting taste warm with heavy hints of hops. Very malty with hints of chocolate.
Nice dark color. Strong taste of alcohol, and a nice mouthfeel. Overall a very decent beer. turbo (1271) - Arizona, USA - APR 3, 2005
2005 Great Arizona Beer Festival.
Dark amber with a roaty malt aroma.
Flavor is a bit watery, sweet and malty and the alcohol is well hidden.
Not bad. cbkschubert (2901) - BFE, Arizona, USA - MAR 27, 2006
On tap at the dog track - A clear deep red beer with very little head. Not much of an aroma. Light malt favor with a balanced bitterness. Very light alcohol warming. Medium body with some residual sweetness. Not bad. RCL (2032) - Waltham, Massachusetts, USA - JAN 10, 2008
I would have liked a bit more hops in this one, but perhaps I’m just too used to barleywines. Beautiful dark amber color. Naven (1001) - Poway, California, USA - JAN 20, 2008
12 oz bottle. Nice looking dark amber color. No real aroma. Flavor is very much malt-forward, with no real hop presence. Strong, flavorless beer. Where’s the hops?

12oz bottle. Aroma of sugared walnuts and almonds, brown sugar, some fruity sweetness and light caramel notes. Pours dark brown with some deep maroon highlights. Flavor is nutty with grassy hops and lemony tartness on the finish. Slightly metallic on the back of the tongue. Medium bodied and creamy with a tart finish. Interesting, but altogether unimpressive. Thanks Craig! Sparky (2244) - Phoenix, Arizona, USA - OCT 15, 2008
Bottle. Pours a hazy brown with a half finger beige head and nice lacing. Nose is malt, molasses and light roasted chocolate. Taste is toffee, toasted barley, some brown sugar and light cocoa with a bitter finish. Medium creamy mouth feel. Not bad at all – easy drinker. yobdoog (1888) - Kingston, New York, USA - MAY 1, 2009
Dark brown with a fluffy off white head. Toasty and caramel malts. Sweet with a little honey and bread. Hint of smoke and a nice rich body. Only so so for me. Styles (2016) - Lincoln Park, Michigan, USA - APR 18, 2006
Bottle courtesy of FlacoAlto. Aroma very nutty and cardboard like-stale maltiness. Faint hop background. Flavor again is very nutty up front with bitter english hop finish. Very dry. Just o.k. jercraigs (11071) - Toronto, Ontario, CANADA - JUL 5, 2006
It has got a monkey on it, it has to be good right? Ruby brown body, small tan head. Sweet fruity booze in the aroma hints at brown sugar with a very muted roast malt touch. Lightly roasty acidity dominates my flavour impression over the muted malt. It’s a touch light and a bit flat, it feels like maybe they were trying to make it cask like. Interesting but not for me today. [8%? Wow! I did not taste that at all!] Thanks for the rarity MDS!
