Deep dark brown coloured body with a tihck, three centimetre tall tan head. Aroma of roasted malt, nuts, grapes, earth, alcohol, oak, vanilla and a bit of lactose. Medium-bodied; Strong sweetness up front with caramel and vanilla along with the lactose, showing some grape anid pit fruits and a good but shallow malt flavour and some oak and dry roastiness. Aftertaste shows some coffee flavours, a bit of the caramelised sugars, a touch of peat and malt and a little soy sauce bitterness as well. Overall, not as bad as I was expecting from the other reviews, but not great either - I believe the age helped this one out a bit with a very subdued flavour and a nice smooth finish with no harshness at all. I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased from New Beer Distributors in New York, New York on 08-November-2014 for US$6,50 sampled at home in Washington on 18-January-2016.

I had been given a bottle of this by a student of mine from Portland, and I let it age for a few years. I opened it at the annual holiday gathering of my closest friends, and it was quite excellent. All of the hop profile that seems to have been a hallmark of this had been softened, and although rich, it isn’t as ridiculously thick as some Imperial Stouts--a trait I once adored for which I am now a little less enthusiastic. Short lasting 1 finger brownish head... only okay lacing.. the brew is the expected black.
Nose is a bit odd... roasty, but a dark dried fruitiness seems pretty high for the style... dark cherries and some milk chocolate.. not nearly enough "big stout" qualities for my liking.
Flavor begins with mild roasty qualites... again fruity esters come in quickly and hang on to the finish.. light coffee and chocolate.. okay... needs more heft for sure.
Body is sorta thin for such a big stout...

13 dec 2013, bottle. Dark brown. Nose is dark cereal malt. Thin body and mildly fizzy. This is serious wet malt and burnt toast. Okay.

Inky black with a thin foamy head of a light tan hue. Earthy nose with some roasted black malt tones. The flavor is a bit boozy and earthy and bland, just roasted black malt in there and some gentle char, and light booze. Really one dimensional and disappointing. This stout is all licorice, molasses, and roast. Beautiful black pour, but everything else is just okay.
