Delightfully dark Strong Ale from years gone by. Rich malt and hop balance with a wonderfully warm finish. Not for the faint hearted.

Gravity cask at the 2018 Leicester Beer Festival. Very dark brown, small off-white head. Malt, smoke and plums in the aroma. Sweet taste with a touch of harsh astringency. Some bittering hop in the finish. Long bitter aftertaste with charcoal and salt plum. Not bad but a bit underwhelming.

sound67 (776) - Offenbach, GERMANY - OCT 14, 2015
[Robin Hood Beer Festival, Nottingham Castle, 2015] - Nobby’s Brewery, Nottinghamshire, T’owd Navigation, 6.1%. Jet black, with a big (!), frothy light beige head. Rather mild aroma of dark chocolate, roasted malts. Medium body, hardly watery, mild carbonation. Chocolate, sweet licorice and bitter roasted malts vye for attention at the outset. Middle is drier, but licorice remains, dark chocolate with a hint of vanilla. Finish has the skins of dark berries, chocolate, nuts. Bitter espresso after taste. Intriguing, multi-leveled stout.

All in all not a bad beer from a small brewer who’s beer takes slightly longer than others to drop bright as the landlord explained!
