COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Very limited release.
A collaboration brew from Bridge Road Brewers of Victoria and Nøgne Ø of Norway. This is the kind of beer that needs to be enjoyed in the right place at the right time and not necessarily on a Thursday evening watching the tennis. Why? Well, how many beers do you know with the sort of genesis enjoyed by the Aurora Borealis? Along with its sibling, the Aurora Australis, it has been months in the making, months that have seen two batches of a strong Belgian style Quadrupel brewed on either side of the world then packaged into wooden barrels and sent, unrefrigerated, over the seas from one hemisphere to the other. Along the way, a couple of these barrels have exploded too; making this is a rare treat not to be taken lightly.

Editor’s note: Brewed at Nøgne Ø, bottled at Bridge Road. Shipped to Australia in barrels previously used for whisky.

330ml bottle into chalice glass. Cellared for a good 3-4 years. Pours opaque very dark brown with a thin beige head showing a yellowish tinge. Complex rich malt-driven nose has notes of cherries, plums, figs, raisins, molasses, port and subtle dry whisky. Palate is syrupy thick and smooth with a sticky oily texture and light carbonation. Taste shows the malt notes with a sweet finish and a dry whisky-like finish with its alcoholic burn. A real winter warmer to be sipped and contemplated.

Great beer, don’t know what the folk at bridge road where trying to do. Tasted the Australis, must have had too much hair from that lady looking brewer in it, sour, infected. Compared to this great beer, I wouldent know their related...?

Herbal malt aroma. Murky brown colour. Great head and lacing. Rich malt spiritus flavour. Smooth lingering palate.

Pours brown, a bit yeasty and hazy because of that (I got the bottom of a bottle). Thin film forms on the beer after the pour. Aroma has some stingy alcohol, whisky barrel, some deep chocolate. Tobacco, strong alcohol. Burning. Nice and warm. Tobacco stays long, also there after initial kick. Body itself is lighter, maybe that explains that strong first sensation. Herbaliquor. Doesn’t carry itself as long as it could. Still good but hoped for a bit more.

Bottle, thanks Jonno. Aroma is whisky barrel, roast, dark fruit. Taste is interesting, roast, booze, dark fruit. Don’t feel the booze, but doesn’t give so much.

Light brown color, big huge whisky nose with some milk chocolate. Very thin body, slight sour with tons of whiskey, with molasses, but honestly not too much depth. Not bad.

330 ml bottle Dark brown color. Thin tan collar, touches of lacing. Big, slow ABV legs. Nose is soft peat, whisky, and oak. Raisins, vanilla, and chocolate compliment it well. Barrel is not as forward as fresh versions and booze is more restrained. Quite a good nose though subtle. Taste is whisky soaked raisins, peat, oak, vanilla pods, and toffee. Barrel very evident and still boozy. Good though. Slow sipper. Medium feel, a tad thin but quite tasty. Developing very well.

UPDATED: JUN 21, 2014 Bottle @ Apotekergaarden, Grimstad. Pours a deep mahogany brown body with a medium creamy off-white head. Nose is vanilla, brown sugar, caramel, booze, brown cheese, hints of grains and toffee. Taste is dark chocolate, caramel, booze, burnt sugar, hints of smoke and wood. Full body, medium to high carbonation. Not bad, but it seems a bit boozy and unbalanced in its sweetness/bitterness ratio compared to the Bridge Road version.
