Appearance: Pours out an ebony-hued body with a small-sized, tan head. Thin veneer of lacing on the way down.
Smell: Robust mocha tones with the incorporated roast, the harsh chocolate, heavy toastiness. Slightly lesser but still hearty notes of dark fruit, rye malt, anise, and woodsy hop pellets.
Taste: Roasted malts, plenty of bitter dark chocolate with a little pinch of licorice and some of the zestful rye coming across mingled with some underlying hop bitterness from the woodsy hops and alcohol warmth. Spiced, peppery mocha on the back half with continued warmth and some roasted grain astringency until the creamyish finish.
Mouthfeel: Medium-plus body. Medium carbonation. Fairly creamy, soft mouthfeel.
Overall: Fairly solid while not a jump for joy beer. Nøgne Ø generally handles the malty brews well.
Bottled. Pours deep brown with a large , beige head, that leaves a good lacing on the glass. Nose of roasted malt, chocolate, caramel and licorice. Sweet flavor with a more dry and bitter. Full bodied, creamy texture and soft CO2. An excellent brew. ★★★★ RichardGretton (4862) - Leicestershire, ENGLAND - MAY 27, 2014
Bottle. Close to pitch black beer with a strong light brown head. The aroma is roasted with some maltiness, and the flavour is gently bitter and roasted with a creamy maltiness. Overall a nice strongly flavoured dark beer with roasted and creaminess.

Sampled @ Hanne på Høyden. This one pours a dark dark cola-brown body with a small quickly sidesticking tan head. On the aroma it’s really lovely roasted and sweet with dark dried fruits, dark chocolate, sticky dark caramel and hints of some alcohol. Quite lovely. It has that nice thick and almost viscous, creamy texture with a average, small bubbled carbonation level. In flavor it’s not unexpectedly, dark, bitter and roasted. I get some clear dark Belgian chocolate, with tons of roasted malts. It feels really round and delicious in the flavors this. It also has a extreme-lasting warming roasted chocolate aftertaste that’s literally making me taste the beer for a very long time after I’ve swallowed it. They’ve done it again! 11.04.2012 robinvboyer (4811) - Sturgeon Falls, Ontario, CANADA - JAN 28, 2017
500ml bottle from the lcbo. Black pour, large brown head. Big roast, pine resin hops, soft spice from the rye, and hints of bitter cocoa. Silky mouth feel, soft carb. Finish is medium bitter, with strong licorice notes, anise, fennel and more pine. Sweetness fades and pine rounds everything out, with more roast. Lowenbrau (4802) - Asturias, SPAIN - SEP 22, 2017

Pours black with nice off white head. Moderate head retention, little lacing. Coffee, licorice, roasty, spicy nose. Medium body, average carbonation, slick texture. Taste is roasty, licorice, spicy. Dry and bitter.
UPDATED: MAR 17, 2012 Bottled. Pours a brilliant very dark brown with ruby highlights. Medium sized dense choco head leaving sticky laces. Smells nice. Rich and complex. Dark bread and nuts, creamed coffee and milk chocolate, and a just the right amount of hops. Supercreamy in the mouth. Full and succulent. Chokolate and coffee flavors. Dark bread and rye grain. Well, more complex and rounded than anyone I can imagine. This beer is awesome! rami_pl (4791) - Warszawa, POLAND - MAY 16, 2016
