Our 100th batch, brewed for the enjoyment of the brewers, but popular demand forced us to release it commercially. Most enjoyable in a comfortable chair in front of a roaring fire.

Recommended serving temperature 16°C/61°F Ingredients: Maris Otter, wheat, and chocolate malt; Columbus, Chinook, and Centennial hops; English ale yeast, and our local Grimstad water.

23,5°P, 80 IBU, 10% ABV.

Editor’s note: Even though the label says "Barley Wine" in the States, the brewery usually says it’s brewed to be an IIPA. The American label was supposedly a glitch. In Europe it’s sold as an IIPA. But to save the admin crew some time dealing with user feedback, it’s listed as a Barley Wine.

The aroma is by far the best thing about this. Fresh and fruity and smokez. Appears brown and muddy, and not much taste. The palate is disapointing.

Mooie caramelkkeur met een goede kraag. Ruikt vol, zacht, zoetig, vanille, crème, beetje alcohol. Smaakt vol vanille, houtig, alcohol, kruiden. Tikkeltje bitter. Volle alcohol afdronk.

In USA known as barley wine in EU as DIPA. I get it as barley wine, namely pours deep redish brown, slightly clear with fluffy dissipating light brown/ beige head. Aroma: malts with notes of toffee, caramel, white bread, milk chocolate, red and dark fruit esters....flavor follows aroma: malts character with notes mentioned by aroma, supported with dark, red fruit like esters, pine, spicy, fruity (actually orange marmelade) like hop character and gentle alcohol warmth. Slightly dry, bitter finish. Full body, smooth texture, moderate carbonation.

Bottle. Nice dark brownish color, whitebeigiey head that lingers. Caramel, bready, cereal, a bit toasted, very bitter and a bit sweet taste. Very malty thick bodied. A bit too bitter and spicy

BOTTLE. (Batch 1089. BB 09.12.18) Pours a kole beer with flat off white head.. Dried fruits & malty aroma, has subdued with age.. Thuck rich caramel malt body, harshness has died with age, yet the dried fruit is still there, quite enjoyable.. Sourced my cellar

This is my first time trying out Norwegian brewery Nøgne Ø. It’s their #100, a barleywine style ale brewed to celebrate their 100th batch, but they’ve continued production due to high demand. This particular one dates back to 2013. I’ve had it sitting in my cellar since 2014 or so. It comes in at 10% ABV. It pours a brown body that looks black in the glass. When held up to the light it has a golden brown tint. The head is holding on well still. The aroma is grainy and earthy with some tobacco notes. There’s quite a bit of stone fruits as well, plum especially. It smells pretty good. The taste is quite roasty up front but balanced really well with some sweet pithy notes. It’s a well rounded taste. It has some signs of piney hops that has gone dull over time. It’s intense and has a real alcohol warmth to it in the aftertaste. I would say that it has aged quite well. I’m not really that into barleywines though (not yet at least), I find them too big and in your face. But this is actually quite nice. A decent and warming beer in these cold months can’t hurt anyone. I’m just happy that I got to share this beer with friends as I wouldn’t be able to finish it all by myself.
