COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Our 100th batch, brewed for the enjoyment of the brewers, but popular demand forced us to release it commercially. Most enjoyable in a comfortable chair in front of a roaring fire.

Recommended serving temperature 16°C/61°F Ingredients: Maris Otter, wheat, and chocolate malt; Columbus, Chinook, and Centennial hops; English ale yeast, and our local Grimstad water.

23,5°P, 80 IBU, 10% ABV.

Editor’s note: Even though the label says "Barley Wine" in the States, the brewery usually says it’s brewed to be an IIPA. The American label was supposedly a glitch. In Europe it’s sold as an IIPA. But to save the admin crew some time dealing with user feedback, it’s listed as a Barley Wine.

[bottle] Dark brown in color, with some really impressive head formation. Dense, creamy.. very fine bubbles. Aroma is piney and resinous, with some slight malt sweetness. Flavors are really quite malty at first, blending well with the powerful hop character throughout. Slightly alcoholic, warming finish.

(Batch #1740-A, brewed 4 Jan 2017) Dark red-brown with a fairly long lasting, light beige head. Nose: Medium dark malt, crystal malt, boiled beef, beef broth, some pine. After some minutes of airing, more hops aromas come out; hay, pine resin. Gradually more and richer malt notes also appear. But it’s a young beer (4 months). I think the nose would benefit from another few months of cellaring. Taste: Smooth, richly carbonated, almost creamy. Well balanced. Obviously a solid dose of hops but the richness, the ABV and the sheer density (technically dry matter, I guess) balance it all out. Perhaps a bit much hops for a barley wine but then I don’t think this was ever made to fit into any pre defined category. Towards the exit there is a noticeable, malty sweetness, accompanied by a reasonably dry hoppiness. A tasty and rich beer, albeit a bit young and "unfinished". The total impression is off-dry but i think that as this beer ages, the hops will gradually subside and allow more sweet malt to the fore. So I’d expect that in a year or two it might taste semi sweet.

Interesting that the brewery says there’s a glitch and it’s being listed as a barleywine when actually it’s supposed to be a double IPA. I don’t pick up any indications of a double IPA at all and it’s an extremely smooth barleywine I guess.

Mörk brun-röd, ogenomskinlig, orange-ljusbrunt skum. Doft: Humle, burkfrukt, alkohol, malt, lite apelsin, lite trä, exotisk frukt. Smak: Som doft + kanderat socker, dadlar, tamarind, lite fikon. I doft underbar, i smak så gott som perfect. Smaken påminner om min Barley Wine.

Bottle 50 cl. Pours a murky purple brown with a medium but fading off-white head and an aroma of hops, toffee, liquor, roasty malts, grapefruit, citrus, flowers and honey. The taste is medium sweet with a full body, a really good balance and a nice long lasting hoppy bitterness.
