Bottle from Premier Gourmet in Buffalo. Reddish-brown with a slight haziness and a small tan head. Aroma is malty with notes of sour yeast, wet soil, and a bit of cocoa. Soft body, quite nice. Flavour of sweet roasted malt, caramel, tobacco, coffee and mellow herbal hops to finish. A very nice ale.

Bottle 0,5 l, batch # 240. Dark brown, hazy. Nice off-white/brown head. Aroma is dark malt and yeast, flavor is chocolate, caramel, hints of bitterness, dry finish. A bit to watery, but still a very good beer.

A good brown. Light malt aroma, and a surprisingly full flavored roasted grain taste. Just a little nutty. About as good as a brown ale can get. brown color, of course.

From a 500 ml bottle, this was the second beer sampled at Cellar’s Nøgne Ø on Friday. Pours a dark brown with an off white thick head. Large bubbles in the head dissolves quickly to a fine film. Nice lacing. Aroma of roasted nuts, burnt caramel, some spiced citrus and white pine hops. Taste is a little smoother than its aroma with a touch of caramel and citrus. Finish is a little thin and bitter.

(500 ml bottle from <A HREF=http://www.ratebeer.com/Place/maine/portland/ target=blank>Downeast Beverage Co.) Decent but that’s about it...Pours the color of dark iced tea with almost two fingers of biege head. Aroma is lightly sweet, caramel perhaps and a roastier quality as head recedes. Mouthfeel a touch on the thin side, perhaps not much more so than most brown ales. Fairly smooth but slightly pebbly. Plenty of sheets and rings of lacing. Flavor is a little wooden but a lingering sweet nuttiness along with some roast and even a hint of smokiness kind of redeems it. A hint of two of Band-Aid also noted. Has maybe a bit of a light sour quality too which is different for this style. A few interesting things here but in the end kind of a letdown for my first beer from this brewery.

Bottle. Pours a very deep ruby, almost brown, with a good size mostly-lasting off-white head. Nice aroma of roasted malt, nuts, some chocolate, spices and hops -- this is a damn fine smelling Brown Ale! Flavour of dark toasty malt, chocolate, nuts and herbal hops with a light bitter finish. Nice body, medium at least. Very good, this is one of the best Brown Ales I’ve ever had.

hopscotch (10761) - Vero Beach, Florida, USA - APR 22, 2007
Bottle... Deep, dark orange ale with a small, frothy, off-white head. Sweet, chocolaty aroma with toasted barley and nutty notes. Sweet, malty flavor balanced nicely by a snappy hop bitterness; moderately sweet and moderately bitter; buttery milk chocolate and toffee with a sprinkle of ground cashews. Medium-bodied and astringent with fizzy carbonation. Lightly sweet, moderately bitter, dry finish.

Poured a full brown color, thin tan head, but excellent retention due to significant carbonation (the opposite end of the brown ale spectrum as New Castle!). The aroma was coffee, roasty malts, some ash, caramel, and molasses. The flavor followed the aroma fairly closely, though finishing with a mintiness. The mouthfeel was full, a touch on the sticky side for a brown. A pretty nice shot at the style, except for a slight chemical (more of a plastic than an oxidized or metal note) type flavor in the aftertaste or something.
