Nøgne Ø is proud to have created this beer in cooperation with Nordic Barista Cup. We wanted to make a coffee beer that was diferent and decided to use cascara, the dried husk from coffee bean, instead of roasted beans or actual coffee. A strong cascara tea was blended with the beer and, in addition, cascara was steeped directly in the finished beer. We hope you enjoy the result! The cascara used is from Aida Batlles farm, Los Alpes, in El Salvador and was donated by Solberg & Hansen.

Thank you meilby for charing the bottle - Golden with a white head - Malt aroma with some coffee notes - Malt body with some berry notes and coffee flavour with bitterness - The malt and coffee bitterness goes into the finish - This was good

A clear golden colour with a small white head. Aroma at first has a fruity sour character followed by some unripe red apple and cold tea notes. I did not get coffee in either the aroma or the taste, berrylike with some fruits and woody notes with a bitterness in the end. Cascara is said to have as much caffeine as the roasted bean, but it doesn’t give that coffee flavour at all. Strange beer but nice to have tried it.

Courtesy of Yngwie. It’s hazy, dark amber with a huge, creamy head. The aroma has notes of bitter berries and a bit of barnyard. The flavor is bitter leaning towards harsh or maybe like tannins or very black tea. It also has notes of berries and bitter fruit - rather peculiar, and in the finish is find barnyard.

Bottle at Green Lion Inn, BSF Event - Blind tasting. Malmö, October 2011.
Sourish acidic aromas of grass, herbs, apples and flowers. Peppery in both aroma as well as taste. Sourish flavours of grass and more aromatic herbs(?). Slightly fruity, almost tastes of nettles. Light hops and some bitterness towards the end! Fun beer to taste blind!

Hazy copper colour. Strong yeasty aroma. Intense mouth carbonation. Spicy yeast flavour. Background is soft and fruity. The bitterness comes in the finish.

En ljusorange öl med nästan vitt skum. Kraftig örtig kryddig doft. Gräs och nässlor. Detta går igen i smaken med en torr bitterhet. Kanske lite för mycket för att dricka större mängder. Dela flaskan med ett par kompisar.

Bottle @ Yngwie’s, courtesy of Yngwie. Thanks man! :-) Slightly hazy orange body, medium creamy head. Nose is cola beans, citrus and hints of wet leaves. Interesting. Taste is acidic herbal notes, hints of grass, wet branches and caramel. Strange, and probably not quite in the "bitter"-landscape at all but still interesting. Not quite there, though.

UPDATED: FEB 29, 2012 Bottle at Gamle Rykene Kraftstasjon. Hazy orange colour with an off white head. Ehhhh this is very difficult to discribe, malty and fruity nose. Special mix flavour, malty, moderate sweet, and strange bitterness that probably comes from the cascara tea.
