4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 15/20
Aroma: malolactic, port, vanilla, dark chocolate, dark malts – delicious. Slightly of coffee (delicious), hot but cool. Slightly towards a cognac-like aroma. Hops can be deiscerned, but not easily. Lovely, but definitely towards a sweet and sophisticated porter/port-realm. Some woody funkiness and vague peatiness comes through, reminds me of watered Laphroaig och Lagavulin. Nice!
Flavour: Initial roastiness followed by hot, alcoholic maltbitterness. Syrup and fine dark chocolate. Slightly towards espresso but with a very smooth bitterness. Fruitiness lingers in the mouth. Nutty, reminiscent of walnuts. Slightly vetegable aftertaste from the hops. Not bad, but should’ve been a bit more ‘fresh’. Given the lack of real bitterness that for example Mikkeller Black has (now that we’re talking extreme impys) the alcohol strength and sweetness is a bit too much for it to be perfectly balanced. Could’ve gone towards a more extreme roast and hopping. It’s hard to pinpoint where the fruityness comes from, or what it is like. I’d compare it to old apples, pears or posibly rosehip. Hard to pinpoint…
After a while, the sweetness is more obvious and hits you first of all with every sip.
Appearance: Black with a brown rind, dark greyish brown head and yellowish lacing. Looks more brutal than it tastes.
Palate: Very smooth, creamy and oily. Superb!

3.1 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20
Bottle shared by Björn thanks. No head and clear red black color. Rubber aroma and dark roasted malty aroma. Huge roasted malty taste. The roasted malt give a malt bitterness that together with hop bitterness blends and balance the big body.

4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottle, dated November 5, 2007, so this beauty is 9 years old. Cheers, spacecoyote! This has held up remarkably well -- there’s only the tiniest hint of oxidization, and there’s still more than enough burnt chocolate / roasted malt bitterness to counter the sweetness of that huge malt bill. It’s boozy but not hot, and all of the different flavors meld together fantastically.

4.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
Bottle. Pours pitch black and generates a brown head if poured from on high, but at almost 8 years old it dissappears very fast. Aroma of roasted malts, fruits and alcohol. Taste is of roasted malts, dark dried fruits - like prunes and raisins, chocolate, resin, licorice, wood, molasses, soy sauce and alcohol. Very complex. Has a very long finish of roasted malts, wood and alcohol. Body is above medium but is surprisingly thin for a 16% beer. Very little carbonation but that’s to be expected I guess. Very good though - a real slow sipper.

Bottle shared, thanks Jonno. Wow, this is a beast, feels like a barrel-aged spiced Porto wine, lots of dark cherry, oak and whiskey, long complex finish. Devilicious stuff, to be sipped and enjoyed at a gentleman’s pace.
