Imperial DunkelWit from Nøgne Ø is an attempt to combine the best of many brewing cultures. Indeed we hope to please the Belgian ale partisan, the dark ale enthusiast, as well as those who love big ales with this one product. That is a tough ambition. At least we had fun brewing it...... Ingredients: Grimstad water, wheat, malted barley, coriander, orange peel, hops and yeast. 24*P, 25 IBU

Shared bottle @ Melkebaren, Sandnes. I would really like to rate this beer higher, but I found this beer conflicting. When I got the glass before I saw the bottle I swore that it was a bock weizen. The aroma and flavors were similar to Aventinus, but the faint flavor of coriander threw me off. When I got to see the bottle, I couldn’t believe it was a wit, dunkel or not.

Dark brown colour with a massive, light brown head. Aroma was both herbal and flowery, some caramel and sweetness. Very rich and filling with lots of alcohol, sugary and spicy. Plums, raisins fruity esters and lots of roasted grains. Quite a bitter taste, very complex with lots of flavours to this beer.

This was poured into a tulip. The appearance was a sly dark brown color with a thin finger-ed white to off white foamy head that dissipated within less than a minute. Lacing clung decently around the glass. The smell started off with a huge coca cola flavor rounding over some nice light spices of ginger, all spice, and coriander. Orange peel seems to be the bitter part to balance nicely. The taste was mainly sweet through the previously mentioned flavors and taking the spices to be the balance all about. Orange peel is still there, but becomes slightly sticky sweet in the aftertaste and moves slyly and sweet over the finish. On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium on the body as there wants to be a nice sessionability about it, however, I find myself sipping this one. Carbonation runs super smooth and has a sticky coca cola feel over my tongue. Overall, as a Belgian Strong Dark ale it works for the most part. I’m just starting to understand that Nogne will almost always have that "coca cola"-ness to their beers. Is their water or yeast or both? I don’t know, but I’d probably still have again.

650ml bottle purchased at Knightly Spirits in Orlando, Florida. Deep brown, thin lasting off-white head, light lacing. Aroma is lightly hoppy, light rye, some chocolate, light sweetness. Flavour is of berries, chocolate, spice, liquorice, some lavender. Sweet mouthfeel, medium body, moderate carbonation.
Finishes long, some spice, light alcohol.
It’s okay, noticeable alcohol, lots of spice. Needs more balance.
