COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
We think the Russian tsar would have liked his stout this way. A dark, rich ale in which a generous sweetness with roasted malt bitterness. Serving temp.10°C/50°F. Great with vanilla ice cream or dark chocolate.

Ingredients: Maris Otter, Munich, roasted barley, oat, black, and chocolate malt; Columbus and Crystal hops; English ale yeast, and our local Grimstad water.

23°P,75 IBU, 9% ABV.

Imperial Stout fra Nøgne Ø er en tett og helt svart ale med stor fyldighet. Smaken domineres av kaffe, sjokolade, lær og tørket frukt. Vi synes den passer bra til mørk sjokolade og kraftige desserter.

OK imperial. It has all the nice roasted & toasted malts, chocolate, raisins, and oats, but has too much english style malts and hops to really grab me. For me, it’s a little off balanced. It needs a bigger presence.

UPDATED: FEB 19, 2017 Nose presents elderberry, rye toast, nuttiness, & loads of molasses, with hints of toasted walnuts. Flavour is remarkably different than the nose, beginning with hints of grassy celery, immediately followed by dry gingery cola, with hints of cocoa & milk chocolate, finishing with plenty of dry smokiness trailing out to hints of raisin. The palate is very dry, with somewhat moderate body. Skilfully & enjoyably crafted!

Bottle. Pitch black in colour. Very roasty/burnt malts. Liquorice, dark bitter chocolate, espresso coffee, toffee, caramel. Oily and tary. Slightly salty. Fruity (berries & dried fruits). Bitter hops evident. Earthy. Alcohol well disguised. Smooth, rich, bittersweet roasty/burnt malty taste throughout . Dry roasty/burnt malty finish. Excellent! A Stunning Beer! (2008)

Bottle at The Bottle Lab, Leek. Pours a black colour with a thick mocha head. Aroma of dark chocolate, roasted malts, coffee, leather, slight dark fruits, a little smoky wood chips and subtle caramel. Taste of chocolate, roasted malts, coffee, dark fruits, some smoke, slight caramel, a little umami, a hint of wood and subtle molasses. Full bodied and soft carbonation. A long, bittersweet, caramelly, roasted bitterness in the finish. A great imperial stout with classic flavours. Full bodied and warming with a long, silky finish.

From bottle. Pours thick, pitch black with a coffee-like fawn head. Nose of blackcurrant, black cherry, fresh coffee grind, dark chocolate, burnt toffee, biscuits, roasted malts. Taste is biscuits and red fruit to start, toffee sweetness and dark chocolate in the middle, toast and marmite on the finish. Complex and lovely.

Half in the rake. The very dregs of the keg. Not great on the nose but the taste is very smooth and well balanced. Chocolate raisins, that sort of thing. M and ms. Good stuff

Pours a pitch black color with medium brown head. Aroma has coffee, roasted malts, slightly chocolate, molasses and dark fruits. Taste follows the nose, lots of coffee forward, molasses, toffee, chocolate, berries and dark fruits. Smooth mouthfeel, clean finish.

intense aroma - well roasted malt with alcoholic notes (very pleasant), sweetened chocolate with milk, plums and few figs, some flowers and slightly soured in the background (with some tar/pitch and old wooden cask notes). medium to strong aroma - moderate bitter (very pleasant), with a lot of roasted malt, some burnt notes (wood, ash, semi-dry leafs), a bit smoked black fruits, some honey and nuts jam, brown dry bread’s crust and alcohol in the final. very good and balanced!

50cl bottle. Dark dark brown with big-ass head. Dark chocolatey aroma, hint of nuts and cherry/currant fruit. Flavor is on the sweet side (toffee), roastiness is not as crazy as with some stouts. Very mild carbonation and creamy mouthfeel.
