Tasting with Shaun Hill at Three Penny Taproom - Poured a very dark black/brown in color with an nice ruby red hue where it thins out at the edge. Little or not head, but what of it there was produced some small lacing on the glass. Aroma was overpowering with oak and vanilla. The Bordeaux from the aging barrel really dominates the flavor profile and significantly masks the flavor of the Imperial stout underneath. Worth drinking, of course, I am a bit disappointed; particularly since the other ratings here lead me to believe/expect better... BBB63 (6567) - La Porte, Indiana, USA - JAN 3, 2010
375 mL Bottle from Secret Santa and shared with Shawn: Pitch black with an oily appearance but once you swirl the beer, tiny tight bubbles do appear, quite viscous looking. The aroma is an outstanding blend of barrel influence and base Imperial Stout. Charred oak, slight winey vinous esters along with chocolate, roast, molasses, tobacco, leather, fig and herbal hops vapours. The taste did not disappoint and followed suit with a big rich malty and dark fruit overtone with moderate ashy smoke, snappy molasses kick and some spicy hop tones before the woody and moderately alcoholic finish. The mouth feel displays an oily character along with some oatmeal creaminess, nicely warming and a tad ashy. SrSilliGose (3324) - pouring bus, New Brunswick, CANADA - JAN 2, 2010
OUTSTANDING and far exceeded my expections, I would love to try this with a few years in age on the bottle. Think BA Expedition but with a slight winey character and you get the idea, this should be near the top of any stouties wish list.
bottle shared by bbb63- thanks mike. pours pretty much black with a small brownish tan head. oily legs. aroma of dark chocolate, black licorice, big molasses, figs, plum, and grape notes. wow. really nice roasty and bitter high cocoa dark chocolate flavor. this was awesome. Damn near perfect imperial stout. Roasty, bitter dark chocolate, figs, just great. Nice sticky mouthfeel. best beer of the decade to date! THANKS MIKE! oh6gdx (26485) - Vasa, FINLAND - DEC 25, 2009
Bottled (thanks brunnsbe!). Black colour, small brown head. Aroma is mild wine, some coffee as well as some slight alcoholic notes. Rather wooden as well. Flavour is quite much the same with very big time coffee and vanilla towards the finish and aftertaste. A bit sweet, otherwise a really nicely balanced barrel aged brew. It’s pitch black with a small, creamy, dark brown head, and it looks like oil when I pour it into my glass, and the mouthfeel confirms it. The aroma has notes of wood, vanilla, roasted malt, licorice and red wine. The flavor has a light sweetness and a roasted bitterness and notes of licorice, red wine in a nicely balanced way, loads of oak and vanilla, that continues in the long aftertaste and ends in a slightly bitter finish. Very nice indeed!
