With the developing interest in Belgian abbey ales and the monasteries that brew them, it’s time to remind the world that here in the U.S., we have a Monk of our own. Jazz icon Thelonious Monk is the inspiration for North Coast Brewing’s new Belgian-style abbey ale called, appropriately enough, Brother Thelonious. The beer is being released in conjunction with the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz (www.monkinstitute.org), and the brewery will make a contribution to the Institute for every case sold to support jazz education.
2013 vintage - 9.4% abv Like a Belgian “Dark Strong Ale”, the beer is rich and robust with an ABV of 9%. The package is a 750 ml bottle with a traditional cork and wire finish and features a label picturing the jazz master himself.

Poured from a 12oz brown bottle into a shaker at Plush with dinner. Absolutely love the name and artwork. It poured a cloudy deep brown color with creamy, long-lasting beige foam, nice spritzy little bubbles and lace. Very pretty and aromatic. True-to-style Belgian Dubbel aromas and flavors, very toffee-like, smooth, some alcoholic warmth. Tasty, authentic, better than some.

Bottle from Whole Foods. Dark amber brown. Nose is dark fruits, toffee, wood, red fruits. Tastes toasted caramel, burnt sugar, red and dried fruits.

Perfectly balanced. Rich, robust and sweet. The Belgian yeast, the hops and the malts are in perfect harmony. Unbelievably delicious beer A great Belgian style Abbey ale, the best I've tried yet and it is brewed in California. Hell it's flat out one of the best beers I've ever had. Second tasting. Still quite enjoyed it but was not blown away by it like the first time. Strong alcohol flavor with notes of plum, prune, banana and raisins. Mellows and improves as it warms. In my opinion the strong alcohol flavor is a bit overpowering and out of balance with the other notes. No longer my favorite Belgium, As I have had almost two dozen new Belgiums since trying this for the first time, but it stands it's own against many of them Third tasting: a very fine beer but you must really let it warm up before it comes into its own Fourth tasting, my birthday 2017, yum ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Sampling this from a 750 ml bottle acquired in Billings, Montana. Pouring into a Trappist glass it delivers an attractive, very dark amber body and a persistent brown-egg colored head. Alluring presentation. Lifting the glass to my nose I find cane sugar, ripe fig and raisin. My first taste does not equal the scent but it is still quite good. Yeast, malt, yellow plum and a hint of red licorice. Great mouthfeel, very full, chewy. I get a slight bitterness finishing. Another commendable domestic effort at a Belgian ale.

Vom Fass auf den Berliner Braufest 2016-09 getrunken. Noch ein Bier im belgischen Stil. Nicht schlecht, aber für so was brauch ich nicht "bis in die USA zu reisen". Viele Belgier können das besser. Aber das hier ist immer noch ein gutes Bier, aber leider nichts besonderes.

25.4floz (750ml) bottle bought about a year ago (freshness/vintage not found), tulip glass used. Seems to appear murky because of the muddy brown-red color, which is topped off with a glistening retentive light-brown head. Date aroma, and flavor invokes much the same over a full, sweet palate. A well crafted ale in the Belgian strong brown/Abbey vein.

Pours a mahogany color with a thick cream head. Smell is bread, raisins, fig. Taste is very robust. Picking up brown sugar, fig, chocolate, prunes. A bit creamy on the palate with a slight bitter finish. Very tasty.

Small bottle from Dyspensa in Radom. Piwo ma ladna etykiete, ladnie i obficie się pieni, choć jest kremowa pianka to opada szybko nie zostawiając nic na kieliszku Chimay. Dosc jasne bez osadu, barwy czerwonej. Zapach jakby nalewka wisniowa i trochę miodu gryczanego. W smaku trufle, czekoladowy tort i deser, ogolnie bardzo jakby to powiedzieć ciasteczkowe było to piwo, ale także owoce ciemne. Rozgrzewajace, smaczne ale zarazem lekkie. Troche inne niż rasowe Belgijskie mocne Ale. Ogolnie oceniam na dobre ale zbyt mało wyraziste. Na koniec chciało by się zaspiewac: "All That Jazz"

Bottle. Brown color, beige head. Aroma of raisins, dates, plums. Taste has dried fruit, stewed prunes, raisins. Very Tasty.
