COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
With the developing interest in Belgian abbey ales and the monasteries that brew them, its time to remind the world that here in the U.S., we have a Monk of our own. Jazz icon Thelonious Monk is the inspiration for North Coast Brewings new Belgian-style abbey ale called, appropriately enough, Brother Thelonious. The beer is being released in conjunction with the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz (www.monkinstitute.org), and the brewery will make a contribution to the Institute for every case sold to support jazz education.
2013 vintage - 9.4% abv Like a Belgian Dark Strong Ale, the beer is rich and robust with an ABV of 9%. The package is a 750 ml bottle with a traditional cork and wire finish and features a label picturing the jazz master himself.

Had a strange taste that I could not identify. Not entirely unpleasant, but weird enough to not want another. Highly eccentric, just like Thelonious.

Es una reinterpretacin americana de una Abada belga. Vierte por tanto rojo oscuro, prcticamente marrn y su espuma color beis es discreta pero acompaa bastante bien todo el rato. Aroma a caramelo y licor.

12 ounce bottle from Everetts in South Beloit IL, consumed at cellar temp from a Leffe glass. Dark plum, translucent, with a small-to-moderate fast-diminishing off-white head....plummy-brandyish aroma, touches of caramel, some fairly strong yeasty notes coming through on the second nosing, light noticeable alcohol presence...front very very sweet and also really viscous and syrupy, like a soda with the syrupy settled to the bottom; on a second sip this is a little less noticeable, and its not quite so cloying-sweet; grapy characteristics dominate with a fair bit of soft murky yeast in the middle...dries out somewhat towards the finish but remains thicker and moister (if that makes sense) that Id like...alcohol presence is fairly subdued until its going down the gullet; it remains very thick and the carbonation being fairly low doesnt help. Not exactly terrible but kind of a soggy mess thats really mostly drinkable because I wanted a Belgian strong ale at the moment; alas this wasnt my best possible choice. Could have sworn Id rated it before also, I know Ive had it before. Well, its available in small bottles, thats one thing to say for it, but alas thats not enough.

355ml bottle pours dark amber with slow forming tan head. Amazing hoppy aromas of dried fruit and bread. Tastes of dried apricot, peach, orange peel, brown sugar and yeast. The 9.4% alcohol is present but cleverly masked by the fruit and sweetness. Finish is nutty and with strong fruit characters. Amazing and unique Belgian-style strong ale. Love the branding and philosophy.

Lots of malt in the nose, toffee, dark fruits. Dark brown pour with thin foam. Medium / heavy body, light fizz and slick on the tongue. There is some yeasty crispness in the middle, but it is dominated by the sweetness. Strong alcohol burn at the end reminds you that its 9%.

355ml bottle served in a Rochefort Trappist glass. A: Pours a clear very dark amber to brown color forming a small and very creamy head with medium retention and tons of spotty and creamy lacings left in the glass. S: Sweet nose. Strong notes of dark dry fruits, caramel and nuts. Earth, spices and brown bread. Hints of grassy hops. T: Sweet upfront. Strong notes of dark dri fruits (raisins and plums), banana cake, dry figs, candi sugar, toffee, caramel malts and nuts. Roasted malts. Finish is bitter. Great bittersweet balance. M: Full body. Medium carbonation. Very fruity aftertaste. Lots of raisins and caramel. Persistent bitterness. O: Great drinkability. Great Belgian style Ale made in USA. Great tribute to Mr. Thelonious.

Miam !

Poured a 2013 12 oz bottle into a snifter. Appearance is a cloudy reddish brown with a medium golden amber 1 finger head that dissipates rather quickly. Aroma is that of bananas. Palate is a medium mouth feel with perfect carbonation for this style. Overall it feels great going down and was good either sipped or chugged :) Taste is far superior having aged 3 years from when it was fresh. i paired this with a salad that had a sweet dressing and this paired very well. Taste is of dark fruits, bananas and a nice level of booze. Overall, this is an excellent beer to let sit for three years. Glad I opened this today. If you have a 2013 I suggest you pour it today, because you wont be disappointed. Cheers!
