COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
With the developing interest in Belgian abbey ales and the monasteries that brew them, it’s time to remind the world that here in the U.S., we have a Monk of our own. Jazz icon Thelonious Monk is the inspiration for North Coast Brewing’s new Belgian-style abbey ale called, appropriately enough, Brother Thelonious. The beer is being released in conjunction with the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz (www.monkinstitute.org), and the brewery will make a contribution to the Institute for every case sold to support jazz education.
2013 vintage - 9.4% abv Like a Belgian “Dark Strong Ale”, the beer is rich and robust with an ABV of 9%. The package is a 750 ml bottle with a traditional cork and wire finish and features a label picturing the jazz master himself.

Had a strange taste that I could not identify. Not entirely unpleasant, but weird enough to not want another. Highly eccentric, just like Thelonious.

750ml corked bottle poured a clear brown hue w/ a medium fully diminishing fizzy tan head. Light sweet bready aromas. Initial flavor is moderate sweet with a moderate bitter finish. Tastes are brown sugar, Belgian sugars, caramel, dark breads, figs, and tobacco. Full bodied w/ a warm boozy finish. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

I have had better belgium ales, there is a bitterness in the after taste that I do not believe should be there in a quality ale. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Light brown colour with thin head. Aroma and flavour have plenty of candy sugat and malts. Good balance of sweetness and alcohol.

Brilliant brown with a foamy tan head. Aroma is of dark dried fruit, toffee and molasses. The malt sweetness is balanced by the drying alcohol. Medium bodied (seems thin for the overall hugeness of the beer. Great malty, spicy finish. Love it!

This is a very nice Belgian - and we like the Thelonious Monk nod. Pours a dark brown, with a malty and smooth aroma. The taste is also quite smooth, with some light sweetness and a slightly creamy texture. Great for sneaking onto an airplane in LA to share with your booboo when you’re back on the east coast.
