COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
With the developing interest in Belgian abbey ales and the monasteries that brew them, it’s time to remind the world that here in the U.S., we have a Monk of our own. Jazz icon Thelonious Monk is the inspiration for North Coast Brewing’s new Belgian-style abbey ale called, appropriately enough, Brother Thelonious. The beer is being released in conjunction with the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz (www.monkinstitute.org), and the brewery will make a contribution to the Institute for every case sold to support jazz education.
2013 vintage - 9.4% abv Like a Belgian “Dark Strong Ale”, the beer is rich and robust with an ABV of 9%. The package is a 750 ml bottle with a traditional cork and wire finish and features a label picturing the jazz master himself.

This is just through and through a good solid beer. The color, taste, palate are all exactly my style. May not fit a classic profile, but its an outstanding example of exactly what it is. Good stuff!

Nice thick, creamy, steamroller kinda beer. Not for the faint of heart. Similar to MONK himself, its complex but soothing. Fruity and lightly sweet but still packs a rich punch. Pairs well with Epistrophy at some time ’round midnight.

This beer makes me want to sing long drawn out jazz songs. It makes me want to drink more of it. This beer is a great example of great Belgium Abbey Ales. Gonna sneak one back to England with me and share with other like minded friends.

It has a perfect dark amber colour and a complex aroma, which is matched only by the complexity of the flavour. This beer combines the quality of an abbey ale with an easy drinking taste. This beer is so confusing in that the flavour makes several permutations inside your mouth and each sip is something new.

Beautiful ruby red pour. Small big bubble head. Semi sweet bread yeast aroma. Very tasty. Tastes like a real Belgian beer. I usually get this fake taste in American Belgian style beers, but this one tastes authentic. Sweet thick, but not that sticky, malty taste. Similar to a caramel banana dessert. Mild fruit raisin taste. Really enjoy it.

Great beer, with malty xmasi flavours. Long taste, with burnt notes. Alcohol well hidden.

25.4 Oz. bottle pours a dark mahogany into thick creamy tan head with heavy lacing on the glass. Soft carbonated bubbles keep a lingering head on the top of the glass. Opening the bottle revealed an aroma of red wine, roasted caramel, sweet chocolate malts and hint of hops. Initial flavor of spice, ryebread and sweet malty caramel slowly fading into a full bodied, well balanced hoppy finish. Expected this one to have a bitter bite since it was at 9.4% alc. but turned out to be smooth and drinkable. Thus far have not been disappointed with any North Coast offerings.
