Produced in the tradition of 18th Century English brewers who supplied the court of Russia’s Catherine the Great, Old Rasputin seems to develop a cult following wherever it goes. It’s a rich, intense brew with big complex flavors and a warming finish.

The Old Rasputin brand image is a drawing of Rasputin with a phrase in Russian encircling it—A sincere friend is not born instantly.

Old Rasputin looks the part, plays the part and delivers intangibles to boot.Black French roast coffee with a thick two fingered brown sugar tint head. Plenty of lace along the glass as it drinks, excellent for an imperial stout.Nice blend of roasty near smoky malt, classic espresso rich tones of the style. Huge bittersweet chocolate in the malty body with nice touches of orange, mint and grapefruit hop character. Luscious medium full body, slightly warming with moderate carbonation. Rich chocolate character dark and bittersweet with with roasty ground dark coffee beans. Some vanilla bean and licorice. A nice touch of earthy and citrusy hops fills the mid palate.Warming alcohol in the finish. Well balanced fermentation, leads to a quintessential Russian imperial stout. In a beer world rife with extreme indulgence of ingredients and absurd drives to be aggressively hopped alcohol monsters with funny names, Old Rasputin rests as a classic you should always be thinking of, especially when thinking RIS.

Intense sticky alcoholic beginning. Intense dry and nice bittered, lots of roast. Very dry body, the aftertaste is very dry roasted malty and bitter, the alcohol is not too intense. Round and intense - Espresso, dried dry plums, lots of burned malt. Fantastic intense and dry brew.

Alcohol, anise, pine, oak. Surprising the alcohol doesn't blow you away more, the incredible balance is the real impressive piece here. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

UPDATED: JUL 20, 2017 On tap, nitro. What’s to say that hasn’t already been said - ultimate stout. Great mouth feel, palate, taste, aroma and finish. Can’t compare bottles to tap on this one - bottles don’t do it justice, and I’d rate it lower in bottles. If possible, get it on tap with nitro instead of CO2.

At Rocco’s, Seattle. Pours cloudy jet black with a small, foamy, beige head. The aroma contains roasted malt, (cold) coffee, toasted bread, hops, some dark fruit (figs) and smoke. It tastes light sweet at first, then medium to heavy bitter with hoppy hints, a long roasted finish and balancing maltiness. Full body, fizzy carbonation, oily texture. Great complexity.

For me one of the most overrated beers on Ratebeer, nice but... lacks character. Pours dark brown with a medium beige-browinish head and sticky lacing. Aroma of rosted malts, chocolate and vanilla. Taste is lots of roasted dark malts, with notes of chocolate and coffee, medium to high bitterness, nice lingering taste of malts. Full body, sticky, soft carbonation, bitter finish. Good but not as expected. At all!

From old tasting notes. Translucent black brown color. Rocky tan head. Intense roasted malt nose. Hints of licorice and molasses. Bittersweet roasted malt flavor. Thick, chewy mouthfeel. strong boozy overtones. Bitter hop finish is long and intense. Very nice.
