Produced in the tradition of 18th Century English brewers who supplied the court of Russia’s Catherine the Great, Old Rasputin seems to develop a cult following wherever it goes. It’s a rich, intense brew with big complex flavors and a warming finish.

The Old Rasputin brand image is a drawing of Rasputin with a phrase in Russian encircling it—A sincere friend is not born instantly.

Amazing. Had many on draught in Chicago many years ago. The next day I could still remember what did me in. Had one from a bottle yesterday. Still amazing- less aroma than from draught but still delicious.

Pour is a still deep dark brown. Nice foamy head. Smells of leather, smoke, black licorice, and coffee. Taste is similar, layered and complex. Crisp and light but dark and heavy. Nice

Pours black with a good creamy head. Flavors of bitter chocolate and cocoa followed by a nice dry finish. Very good.

@ Basunen 17-11-02: Riktig trevlig imperial stout med tydliga toner av choklad och kaffe. Riktig mjuk och fin

4 finger tan head. Pitch black beer.

Aroma is dark rye bread, dark chocolate, espresso coffee and a light touch of toffee.

Taste is dark roast coffee, burnt wood, slight dark rye bread, 90% dark chocolate and an ever so slight hint of brown sugar.

Mouthfeel is pretty thin for the style with a high bitterness and a low carbonation. Slightly creamy.

Overall: This is highly revered in the craftbeer community but I was quite dissappointed to be honest. A huge roastiness and a big bitterness, both of which I love in a Impy. But where's the balance and the complexity? Barely any sweetness at all to counter the 'dark' flavours and too light of a body for the high bitterness to really shine. Ultimately, it feels one dimensional and I'm beginning to feel that buying two BA bottles (one Rye barrel aged and one Wheat barrel aged) of this for $20 each was a mistake. That's another review for another day though.

Botella de 33 cl adquirida en Gastrópolis ( Zaragoza ). Color negro profundo, espuma abundante de color marrón. Mucho cuerpo, espesa. Aromas a maltas tostadas y ahumadas, frutas maduras (ciruelas), pasas, frutos secos dulces (avellanas). Sabor complejo, postgusto amargo. Notas a caramelo, café, chocolate negro. Alcohol muy equilibrado. Una delicia.

UPDATED: OCT 27, 2017 355ml bottle. Pours black. Toast, hazelnuts, plum, sultanas, liquorice, little blackcurrant. Not a huge body. Very good.

From Jun 2006 Poured from 12oz bottle a pitch black(with reddish tones) having a fairly large head of foam that dissipated slowly leaving just a fine layer. The smell is of roasted barley with some malty sweetness and notes of coffee. The taste is huge! Lots of roasted barley, chocolate, and coffee with some grain and a bit of anise. Very very complex and very rewarding to my taste buds. I've had this one a few times in the past and it never fails to impress me with its flavour and how well it hides the rather substantial 9%abv. Bottom line: This is a world class sample of the style that is a *must* to try.

Czarne nieprzezroczyste piwo z ładną drobnopecherzykową pianą. Aromat słody palone, kawa, czekolada gorzka. W smaku podobnie mocno palone, wytrawne. Po ogrzania więcej czekolady może pralin. Klasyka stylu

A good, hearty stout, without hardly any taste at all. Quality, thick stout, but about as generic as you can get. You basically can't taste anything besides 'stout taste'. Very overrated but priced great if you just want an entry level, quality stout. It's okay, I've had better Russian Imperial Stouts but this is a great background beer after you've had something more specific, on the nose, and tastier. Helps wash away anything spikey or individualistic. Completes a night well.

Bottle pours black with a three finger dirty brown head and sticky lacing. Aroma is cappuccino. Taste is initially sharp, burnt, abundant flavors, finishes just a bit sour.
