COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Produced in the tradition of 18th Century English brewers who supplied the court of Russia’s Catherine the Great, Old Rasputin seems to develop a cult following wherever it goes. It’s a rich, intense brew with big complex flavors and a warming finish.

The Old Rasputin brand image is a drawing of Rasputin with a phrase in Russian encircling it—A sincere friend is not born instantly.

UPDATED: DEC 10, 2017 Notes of vanilla and faint chocolate on the nose. Smooth and medium body with a roasty, but not overpowering finish. Incredibly smooth for the style. Maybe very slight diacetyl notes, but not unpleasant considering the style. Surprisingly little alcohol taste given the ABV. Pitch black with a nice brownish head.

Pours a deep black with a rich tan head. Aroma is burnt toast, dark chocolate, and a bit of booze. Taste starts sweet dark chocolate and brown sugar flavors, then the hops kick in for a nice, long dry finish. Sold mouth feel throughout. This one is right up my alley. Very good.

Pours pitch black with a large beige-brownish head and sticky lacing. Aroma of roasted malts, chocolate and vanilla. Taste is lots of roasted dark malts, with notes of chocolate and coffee, medium to high bitterness, nice lingering taste of malts, booze, dark fruits. Full body, sticky, soft carbonation, bitter finish. Pretty good but not as Ratebeer says.

Pour is a still deep dark brown. Nice foamy head. Smells of leather, smoke, black licorice, and coffee. Taste is similar, layered and complex. Crisp and light but dark and heavy. Nice

@ Basunen 17-11-02: Riktig trevlig imperial stout med tydliga toner av choklad och kaffe. Riktig mjuk och fin

4 finger tan head.
Pitch black beer.

Aroma is dark rye bread, dark chocolate, espresso coffee and a light touch of toffee.

Taste is dark roast coffee, burnt wood, slight dark rye bread, 90% dark chocolate and an ever so slight hint of brown sugar.

Mouthfeel is pretty thin for the style with a high bitterness and a low carbonation. Slightly creamy.

Overall: This is highly revered in the craftbeer community but I was quite dissappointed to be honest. A huge roastiness and a big bitterness, both of which I love in a Impy. But where's the balance and the complexity? Barely any sweetness at all to counter the 'dark' flavours and too light of a body for the high bitterness to really shine. Ultimately, it feels one dimensional and I'm beginning to feel that buying two BA bottles (one Rye barrel aged and one Wheat barrel aged) of this for $20 each was a mistake. That's another review for another day though.
