UPDATED: JUL 15, 2014 Bottle: 2012. Extremely dense, turbid copper with even a mild red-ish hue to it; beige head lasts for a few moments before reducing to a soapy collar. Aroma is dominated with some boozy figs & prunes, a touch of anise, & a sweet, glazed toffee underbody. Faint vanilla. Definitely smells hefty, but the booze isn’t too brash. Quite a bit of licorice up front, both sweet red & deep black, hefty raisin & date notes, lathered in sweet caramel sauce & smooth whiskey. The booze aspect is strong & robust without turning into solvent or pure heat. Sticky sweet caramel & toffee malt in the finish with a lighter, grape-y fruit. Very nice ale; this one was aged a little over a year.

Recently tried this on tap at the North Coast restaurant/pub in Ft. Bragg and was immediately impressed. It has a nice ale aroma and the flavor is fantastic: rich, complex, not too bitter. Everything seemed perfectly balanced. For an ale of this ABV that isn’t Bourbon-barrel aged, it is a true stand out. BeerRenter76 (1007) - Texas, USA - MAY 10, 2017
Originally rated on 2/12/09. 2008 vintage, most folks reccomend aging this one and i think they are probably right. Although pretty good it was a bit hot, because the alcohol; while not overbearing was noticeable. Flavor had huge sweet caramel malts, plenty of dark fruits in the aroma and flavor such as raisins, dates and some plum. Overall it was pretty nice but i would like to cellar one and try it again next year.

Thanks Huhzubendah for sharing the 2011 bottle! Poured into a snifter showing translucent caramel brown with no head.
The nose is brandy forward.
The palate is light bodied and moderately carbonated. Medium alcoholic spiciness, slightly cloying without much dimension. oRos (1675) - sacramento, California, USA - APR 23, 2017
