(bottle - 12 oz - 2008 vintage) Dark copper color with a creamy tan head. Aroma is big and sweet. Tons of sweet malts with a nice hop undertone. Flavor is sweet and malty at the start with a strong alcohol bite. Middle is very malty with some hints of caramel. Finishes with a strong and burning alcohol presence and some bitter hops. Bottle from Mega Liquor Warehouse... Pours dark mahogany with a thin head..Smell is dark fruits and alcohol...Flavor is caramel and rassberries with a lingering bitterness.. Tons of carbonation.. It pours a beautiful deep red color. The faint aroma is of cherries, toffee and malt.Taste is spicy, bitter and sweet, and contains toffee, malt, cake dough and caramel. Alcohol shines through a bit in the finish. This is the way I want my barley wine! Not overly bitter and without the malty notes coming through, as in this years bigfoot. UPDATED: DEC 4, 2009 On tap at Prime 16: Pours rusty chestnut brown/orange/amber w/pillowy head (fair retention). The strong alcohol feel in the aroma is a little off putting, but let it sit or get used to it and you can smell a bouquet of berries and ripened fruit (notably apple), as well as plum, pipe tobacco and must. Flavors of aged leather, sappy malt, figs, pine, brandy, and a hint of coffee. Drinkability: Full bodied, bittersweet, alcoholic burn. ’08 vintage, sampled in a snifter. Was hoping for more based on the reviews as well as my affinity for Old Rasputin. Very aromatic with a nice balance between hops notes (grapefruit/citrus) and malts as well as an aroma I wasn’t able to put my finger on. Flavor was well balanced and leaned a little more hoppy than malty. There was a peculiar dryness to it and what another reviewer referred to as woody...I think I could agree to use that term as I’ve not thought of one more suitable. UPDATED: JUN 13, 2010 2010 Vintage. Pours a clear, deep, brownish ruby with a thin beige head. Aroma: honey, sweet fruits, malt and bourbon. Taste: honey, fruit, malts, hops, bourbon, notes of spice. Long, warm alcohol finish. Soft carbonation. Overall a very good beer: smooth taste, nice body with depth. Bottle at Øl & Mat 2010, Oslo. Aroma is heavy on the malt, but nicely balanced by a fruity (fig-like) acidity. Medium to full bodied, average carbonation. Low bitterness. UPDATED: MAR 21, 2011 2010 batch. Hazy dark reddish almost brown. Smells like sweet dark fruit. Taste is hugely malty and quite sweet with the alcohol burn at the end. Would be interesting to see what age would do to this.
