Nice - a strong alcohol presence countered with some nice bitterness and malt. Not as complex as some barleywines - at least not to me. But still fairly good. Marcmo (16) - Illinois, USA - FEB 18, 2002
I would expect more hops from a California beer, such those that are blasted at you in Big Foot Barleywine-Style ale from Sierra Nevada, but I can forgive North Coast for this because they already brew some wonderfully hoppy beers. This beer could also use some more yeast flavors -- some additional esters could make this beer more interesting. gbzia (195) - Cedar Knolls, New Jersey, USA - SEP 1, 2002
Great malty flavor, with a mellow alcohol presence. Noticable but not overpowering hops, great color ... had after diner; a great finish. SiddFinch (155) - Pen Argyl, Pennsylvania, USA - OCT 12, 2002
This is the last bottle of a 6-pack I bought in 2001. Brown and murky with almost no head. Flavor is bready, caramel, raisins and maybe apricott. Alcohol is present but it is quickly wiped away by a very smooth, malty finish. Jokes (1453) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - DEC 29, 2002
Pours a fairly dark color for Barley Wines, at least in my experience. The aroma is mostly sweet malts and fruits. Peaches, plums, raisins, brandy, others. The flavors are not quite as complex. The alcohol is strong, the flavors are strong. An interesting and different Barley Wine, but a good one, nonetheless.

2000 bottling; mid-July 2002 tasting notes. Not very exciting. Age did not help; was big and boozy ~ mid-2000. Big alcohol burn and some vanilla notes…. why do I keep thinking “mediciney”? Sure was fun to drink though (“…take your medicine”). Oooooffff. jgb9348 (6259) - Arlington (Pentagon City), Virginia, USA - DEC 3, 2003

Dark copper colour with strong ruby highlights and a thin light brown head. Aroma of pineapple, raisins, pit fruit, cherries, caramel, alcohol and bubble gum. Medium to Heavy-bodied; Sweet initial flavours turning into an alcoholic burn and then a spicey dry finish. Aftertaste shows a lot of alcohol and not much else. Overall, nose and appearance are great, but too much alcohol and not enough other flavours are noticeable in the taste. I bought this twelve ounce bottle from Norm's in Vienna, Virginia and sampled it on 23-November-2003.
UPDATED: MAR 25, 2004 Smells of cinnamon, brown sugar, and bitter hops, light brown color. Nutty, coffee, brown sugar taste, a very interesting and unusual barleywine. Extremely bitter, while definitely unique, I can't say I cared for the brown sugar flavors in this. Ungstrup (37619) - Citizen of the universe, DENMARK - MAY 8, 2004
[Vintage 2002] A red beer with no head. Both the flavor and aroma is sweet and dominated by cowberries. Walt (2449) - Austin, Texas, USA - AUG 1, 2004
2003: Pours deep amber/light brown with little head...thick and smooth taste...viscous over the tongue with malt and caramel...prunes...alcohol, but very viscous and smooth...finishes with a nice sweetness on the sides of the tongue...oh yeah, did I say viscous?
