This is a big one. Nose drips with thick, pungent fruit, molasses, pine and a small hint of chocolate. Clear brown amber in the glass with about fifteen or twenty minutes worth of head--four oz or so if you’re taking your time. Hop bite comes up front and smooths to a big, syrupy mouthfull of fruit which in turn fades to unashamed alcohol and earthy hop bitterness. Definitely harsh around the edges. Some aging would hopefully tame this but as it is, it’s a slow sipper that needs some getting used to before you can explore the full range of it’s flavors. cvillebeer (134) - Charlottesville, Virginia, USA - MAY 7, 2005
2004 bottle: sizeable head when poured that quickly fades to a thin bead. This beer is a deep amber/red and clear. Aromas of malt, yeast, alcohol and some restrained hops. The flavor is a little hot with alcohol and seems a bit unbalanced. Perhaps I will get a couple to cellar and see what happens. This was straight from a cold fridge so the aromas and flavors will improve as it warms, but initially it tastes a little rough: strongly malty with a sweetish, sticky mouthfeel. There is a noticable malty, alcohol, yeasty flavor in the finish which is interesting. This beer needs some time to smooth out. I think it has potential however. 2003 bottle drank in 2004: Poured a hazy deep burgundy color ale with a small dark beige head with limited retention. Aroma of dried sweet fruit with some floral hops also noticeable. Taste is quite sweet reminiscent of figs and dates with a full body and limited carbonation. Great barley wine, probably one of the best beer from North Coast that I had the chance to sample. strong hoppy aroma. Also vinous notes and some carmel. Pours a nice copper brown, minimal head. Strong alcohol and sweet flavours typical of the style. Date is unknown as it is not listed on the bottle but I’m assuming its this years vintage. Alcohol warming in your gullet and a nice wallop as the alcohol hits the system. i would be interested in trying some aged versions.

This tastes like a quality double or strong Belgian ale masquerading as a barleywine. As a beer, it’s quite nice. Its aroma is malty, slightly alcoholic and classic Belgian-yeast-nutty. Lightly roasted malt, Belgian-like yeast nuttiness, medium hop bittering and a smidge of alcohol round out the flavor profile. Not much fruit notes for a barleywine. Fairly substantial palate. Pours a clear copper-brown with thin white head. Except for the "old" in the name, I never would have figured this to be a barleywine.
Murky brown appearance. Aged for a year. This is much better now than when it was fresh. Flavors have blended together and the rough edges are gone. Lots of flavors going on. UPDATED: JUL 12, 2010 2010-07-12. Dark brown body with a modest tan head that fades. 3+ Modest alcohol starts off the aroma, lightly fruity, dark fruit, caramel, touch of oxidation. Flavour is richly malty and fruity, light bitterness and moderate alcohol dry it out somewhat. Smooth medium to full bodied palate. Pretty solid, and grows on me more as it goes on. 2005-12-XX. Hazy orange tinged dark brown body, with a small beige head. Boozey malt and hops dominate aroma with a touch of caramel and whisps of vanilla. Flavour starts out with lots of malt up front, some caramel, quickly giving way to dry alcohol and accents of hoppy bitterness. Some fleeting glimpses of fig or date like fruitiness awash in a boozey current. The initial finish contains all the best elements of this brew, well rounded caramel malt but does not last long into the aftertaste. Medium palate. 05 bottle. Gigantic aromas of caramel, a bit of vanilla, honey, and alcohol. Taste is pretty much cloyingly sweet, fruity, also a bit of toastyness and big alcohol presence. Mouthfeel is quite coating and full, with moderate carbonation. This tastes good, but the overwhelming sweetness makes this hard for me to drink, and hell no Im not gonna pour it out. Pours a beautiful red/amber color, white head. Aroma is sweet and malty, a little dark fruit, and some alcohol/boozy notes. Flavor is sweet, more ripe dark fruit, lots of alcohol, slightly hoppy kick towards the end. A little more booze, than I’d like. More hoppy than I’d expect for a 2 year old barleywine as well. Nice brew.
