(Draught at Novomestsky Pivovar, Prague, 22 July 2008) Dark ruby colour with frothy, off-white head. Malty nose with notes of wort, dark bread, brewing house and roasted grain. Malty taste with dark bread, wort, raisins and a bittersweet finish. Nice beer.

Dark ruby brown color, firm big brown head. Sweety-bready, caramelly and lightly diacetylic nose. Light chocolaty and sweet caramelly flavor with some woody hops. Kind of drinkable, but didn’t impress me.

Tap @ Novomestsky Pivovar, Prague.
Pours deep black with brownish edges. A great, creamy, beige head on top. Aroma is sweet, chocolate, toffee and lightly roasted malts. Okay mouthfeel. Flavour is sweet, good, soft chocolate and a finely balanced roastedness at the end. Long aftertaste.

From tap at the restaurant. Pours cloudy dark brown with a redish glare and a slowly collapsing light tan head. Butterish and mild roasted malt aroma. Mild roasted to just toasted malt, light liqourice note and mild sweetness in the flavour. Ends mild malty and slight toasted with no bitterness.

Grovlam (4244) - Copenhagen, DENMARK - JUL 1, 2008
Draught @ the brewpub. Huge beige creamy head that really lasted. Dark mahogany color. Excellent display of lacework. As in general with the Prague brewpubs that I had the pleasure of trying, the beer is very crisp, fresh and tasty. Notes of liquorish, butterscotch, mild dusty flora / flower, roasted malt. Over the palate came mild coffee, sweet chocolate and what could appear as dark dried fruity notes as well. Medium bodied with an average carbonation and creamy smooth and crisp texture. Moderated sweet and bitter flavor in balanced symphony. Lingering light roasted malty sweet finish with a touch of liquorish and dusty floral notes at the very end.

Back from a Czech Republic pub-crawl this is part of my express ratings for the “typical” Světlý 11°- (Czech light Pils), Světlý 12°+ (Czech Pils), Polotmavý (Czech Amber Lagers) and Tmavý (Czech Black Lagers). Non-typical beers will receive personalized descriptions after the express ratings.
-------- /> How: Tap at Novomestsky Pivovar brewpub (Prague)
The look: Dark brown with a short-lived medium beige head
To me a typical Czech Tmavé (Czech Black Lager) is: Dark malts and barely any roastiness sensation. Some dark fruits flavours (raisins with a little figs, dates and prunes) wrapped in smooth dark caramel (borderline toffee) and a subtle chocolate note. A bit bready. Moderately sweet without much hops presence and only a mild bitterness (voluntary unbalanced it seems). Very smooth body, like a watery cream.
This one: As above but more watery and not tasty at all. A bit greasy. Disappointing.

(Rating #1509)
