Sampled @ FoBAB 2010. Pours a dark coppery brown. The head is rather thin, but this is looking pretty good to me. Nice pungently sweet malty aroma. SLIGHT toffee, but nothing substantial going on here. A little bit of booze of the nose is a bit distracting. There is a light citrus and pine hop aroma, but the malts are dominating. Stoke. This is as fantastic as hoped. Big brown pour, light tanned head. Aroma is thick with bourbon, heavy vanilla, hints of tobacco, and minor chocolate. The flavor that come off this incredibly balanced beauty are quite full in the departments of coffee, cherries, burnt oak, multiple types of chocolate, and this beautiful long bourboned vanilla finish. pour is a murky dirty copper brown with a tight beige head and fair amount of lace. The nose is actually a rough, notes of bourbon and some cardboard. Rather malty, chocolate and toffee and some stale hop, very messy. Taste is heavy malt, roast and chocolate, notes of bourbon but light. Almost no heat, very little balance. Aroma: Huge alcohol along with danky peach and apricot.
Taste: Big bitter aggressive hops, hot bourbon and sweet malt. Finishes hot.
Mouth. Hot, sticky full body. Modestly carbonated.
Overall: I believe this beer needs to lay down for a minimum of a year to chill out. I get it now....Hellshire. There was so much going on, it hid the barrel character, or at least it pummeled my palate to the point I couldn’t notice much.
On tap at Brouwer’s Hard Liver ’12. Pours a dark cola brown, with a big, dark tan head. Moldy fruit on the nose. Yuck. Skunky hops blend with what would otherwise have been a good barley wine, throwing it far off track. I wasn’t a fan of this one.

Had this one twice now, first at the Bier Stein’s Bourbon Barrel Fest last week and then again graciously shared by Mike of 16 Tons at the release party on Saturday. Poured an orangeish amber with about an inch of light brown foam. Big aromatic notes of bourbon and is that scotch as well? Also smells of oak and vanilla, very pleasing nose. Tasted of bourbon, oak, vanilla, malt sweetness and surprisingly little heat for something so soon out of the barrel. I thought that what I had at the Stein might have just had little heat compared to the other big beers I had that night, but I noticed the same thing the second time around. Bottle. The next Wooden Hell! Pours a caramel clear color with a slight tan head. Caramel aroma, slight hops, and a little barrel. Slight booze note. Med mouthfeel. The nose reminds me of the Angel’s share, and that is very enticing. Flavors of cherries, raisins and light hops are all saturated in the medium body of this warm elixir. Bottle from DA. Cloudy copper pour with bubbly thin tan head. Aroma is bourbon and spicy black pepper. Taste is very similar with a bitter astringent taste that lingers. Low to med carbonation.
