A brown porter that’d be a great beer on its own is even better with a subtle toasted coconut character that complements the dark grains wonderfully. A complex and exotic potion that’s an easy drinking, refreshing tropical elixir.

I dunno, I guess I’m a sucker for a decent porter. I haven’t had anything of note from this brewery, but hell, I’d buy a sixer of this. Nose is sweet chocolate, a tad of roast, grain, and not a lot of coconut. Just a hint. Same for the taste. A bit of a metallic vibe sometimes, but otherwise easy and tasty. Light palate. Pours very dark brown with a creamy mocha head and light lacing.

UPDATED: NOV 17, 2017 On tap. Hazy brown in color with small tan head. Light aroma with a touch of coconut. Sweet with faint coconut presence. Fairly average.

Can - Sweet flavor. Very smooth and creamy. Not much of a coconut flavor but then they do say it got the "right touch" of coconut. A good after dinner beer. Not heavy or offensive to the palate.

Translucent mahogany with a short-lived tan head. Creamy moderately full body with relatively high carbonation.

Aroma: toasted grains, lightly burnt toast, subtle molasses.

Taste: fruity coconut like when it is green and soft, chocolaty roasted notes, dark malty sweetness, dark fruits. Has a somewhat harsh mineral or carbonic bite to it.

Smooth and sweet, though still fairly balanced. A bit odd, but not bad.

A reddish brown porter with a thin mocha head. In aroma, sweet chocolate malt with caramel notes, light coffee, nice but no coconut. In mouth, sweet chocolate malt with light coconut butter, oily mouth feel, vanilla, OK. Can at OttBottShare March 2017.

Pours dark brown with some reddishness, beige head that fades. Toasted malt in the nose with a whiff of coconut and some vanilla. Medium body, little fizz. Tastes of the malt and some anise, earthiness, and maybe a touch of hop bitterness. The caramel / toffee dominates the flavor with the coconut coming out as a detail. (Might be stronger on tap than from a can.) Fairly dry finish.

Can. Pours a dark brown pour with a big java head. Nose is light roasted malt . Taste is light malt with poorly appreciable coconut , quite watery and bland ! Finish is light malt without any real flavor, a lager in drag...ugh! Quaff Score 5 / 10

DOC: 6/1/16

2015 BJCP Category: 30A Spice/Herb/Vegetable Beer (base style: 20A American Porter)

AROMA: Sweet brown malt aroma; very light confectionery notes. Some coconut is noticeable, but it is not front and center. No hop presence. Surprisingly not oxidized. 8/12

APPEARANCE: Brown/deep magenta hue. Partly cloudy with CO2 bubbles visible. Small tan foamy head mostly dissipates. 2/3

FLAVOR: Fairly sweet palette with brown/amber malt providing most of the flavor. Caramel and toffee flavors are noticeable. An underlying earthy bitterness imparts balance. Coconut is so subtle as to be unnoticeable (probably due to age of the can). Missing most of the characteristics of a porter; probably better considered a brown ale due to lack of deep dark malt characteristics. Coconut is a fine garnish, but entirely too light. 12/20

MOUTHFEEL: Medium-light body and carbonation. Finishes quite clean. Easy to drink. 3/5

OVERALL IMPRESSION: Though enjoyable, it doesn’t quite deliver on its marketing hyperbole. 6/10

12 oz. can. Dark brown, beige head. Aroma of chocolate and malt. Taste sweet malt, chocolate, and nuts with hints of coconut.
