The Great Dismal Black IPA, named after the wildlife refuge. The Great Dismal Swamp, in Southeastern Virginia and Northeastern North Carolina, once used as a part of the Intracoastal Waterway, is a dark, full bodied ale, extensively hopped both in bittering and aroma.

On tap at Maddy’s Taproom, Washington DC on 5-Mar-2017. Almost black with a medium sized beige coloured head. Aroma of roasted malt, pine and citrus. Medium body and carbonation. Sweet, roasted malt, coffee, cocoa and grapefruit. Light bitterness and smooth finish.

On tap at Roosters Sourthern Kitchen. Pours black with a tan head. Aroma is roasted malt with citrus and earthy pine hops. Flavor is citrus and light tropical fruit followed by roasted malt and unsweetened chocolate. Finishes with grapefruit and bitter, earthy pine.

Smells of citrus hops. Taste is citrus, pine, a hint of roasted malt. Not terribly flavorful, but decent. Light floral notes finish this off.

4 oz pour on draft at Spacebar. Dark brownish black with beige head. Aromas of licorice, rye, pine, light chocolate. Tastes of roast, rye, spices, floral, pine. Medium body with a dry finish. Pretty good black IPA.

Bottle from trio. Pours soda brown with a ice cream float head. The aroma has a lot of spicy hops, roasted malt, a touch of coffee. The taste has a medium bitterness, plenty is roasted malt, spicy and herbal hops and a touch of citrus.
