COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Over the past year, we’ve collected empty Fernet Barrels from our friends at Leopold Bros. Distillery. Their distinct Fernet includes lavender, honeysuckle, ginger root, bitter aloe, dandelion root, rose petals, chamomile, and pepper. Inspired by the herb & spice flavors of this dark minty liqueur, we promptly filled the barrels with a rich porter. The roasty chocolate malt character is infused with hints of mint and licorice from the herb-soaked oak, creating a decadent flavor and aroma.

FYI: the first pilot batch was 7.3%.

Bottleshare at Chez Smith. Almost clear deep amber beer, small bubbly pale tan head. Palate is light, semi dry and has just modest fine carbonation. Thin but sweetish dark malts bring light cream. Mild and sweet licorice. Loads of spicy herby things going on - rose, potpourri, thai spice, something limey, floral raspberry. Light semi dry finish. Interesting and hides the abv well.

Bottle shared in London - big thanks to Kenwise. Pours deep brown with a creamy beige head. The nose holds light ginger, toasty bread, brown bread, faint cocoa. Medium sweet flavor with ripe, dark fruits, a little alcohol boost, burnt toast, toffee. Medium to full bodied with fine to average carbonation. Lightly warming on the finish, more dark fruits, very slight tang, faint spicy ginger, toffee. Vague cocoa. Quite tasty.

Bottle split at the RBESG ’15 Grand Tasting, Taphouse CPH day 4, 23/08/15. Mahogany brown with a decent beige covering. Nose is toffee, dark fruit rinds, light cocoa rub, subtle barrel. Taste comprises dark fruits, caramelised brown sugar, toffee fudge, chocolate. Medium + bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close with sweet licks. Ok stuff but lacks a bit of depth.

Oakes (19568) - Vancouver, British Columbia, CANADA - APR 29, 2014
Medium brown and murky. Big herbal, boozy fernet aroma. Taste is herbal first, then booze, touch of porter chocolatey, but the two aren’t really talking to each other. Not a beer I can connect with.
