Bottle that has been cellared for some time (4+ years). Had it fresh, but never rated. Pours black with some decent effervescent action and a small deep tan head that dissipates within a minute. Aroma is heavy on the sweet chocolate - and I mean lots of chocolate. Roasted malt notes, a hint of coffee and maybe some caramel in the background. Flavor is quite good, and I wish I remember what this was like fresh, because this seems quite complex compared to what I remember...still an overarching sweetness, but dark fruit, raisins, bitter chocolate - this is much better than I remember it being fresh - guess you hit and miss when lying beer down for a while. Palate is good, but nothing memorable - decent carbonation remains. I’d drink this all the time...think I might have one more left, and if so, give it another year and we’ll see how it goes.

12 ounce bottle shared by BrewEngineer at the 14th Richmond Ratebeer Gathering, 3/19/11. This has some age on it, but I’m not sure how much. Pours a hazy dark brown color with a thin creamy tan head. Good head retention and lacing. Aroma of sweet roasted malts, honey, nutty notes. The taste is roasted malts, bitter hops, honey, coffee, nutty notes. Full bodied. Nice beer.

Poured a rich, opaque black with a good bit of off-white foam on top. Aromas of roasted malt, baker’s chocolate and lightly roasted coffee. On tap @ brewery. 8.9% ABV. Dark brown aspartame with a creamy brown head. Dark roasty, chocolatey, espresso, a touch milky nose. Dark chocolate malty, milky, espresso flavor with a creamy mouthfeel and pretty bitter finish. This is the base for the Bourbon Barrel Stout, just isn’t barrel aged. 2007 bottle shared by Dan at The Royale- thanks, Dan! Pours a dark brown color with a tan ring for a head. Aroma of coffee, bacon, chocolate, brown sugar, dark fruit- very complex, especially given the age on this. Flavor shows less of that bacon smokiness than the nose and instead has notes of chocolate, coffee, brown sugar, molasses, dark fruit and earth. The body has thinned to a light-medium level and has low carbonation and a smooth mouthfeel. Nice imperial stout that I’ll get fresh when and if they re-release it around here.
