4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Appearance: pours a healthy 2" sudsy cream colored head. Recedes slowly leaving decent lacing. Color is deep amber, slightly cloudy, with moderate carbonation.
Aroma: strong malt presence with raisins, caramel, and whole wheat bread. A bit of earthy hops in the background.
Mouthfeel: standard fluffy English ale mouthfeel, fairly light bodied with a somewhat dry finish.
Flavor: a hearty brew. The malt dominates (as expected) with those raisin, caramel, and whole wheat bread (toasted) flavors leading the way. There is also a moderate hop presence in the middle and finish and a bit of lingering alcohol burn with the swallow. Delicious and well made ale.
On tap at Pinthouse Pizza. Brown with a sticky white head. Caramel and cherry notes in the aroma. Light hints of rum. Taste is sweet on a strong caramel base. Dry. Body is medium with moderate carbonation. Good. NachlamSie (3572) - Denver, Colorado, USA - NOV 13, 2017
6 pack from Logan Liquor. This is a beautiful, very deep red and extremely clear. Aroma is malty and fruity with notes of toffee, musty basement, berries, tree bark, and nuts. The palate is pretty full with an appropriate sweetness. Malts provide most of the flavor on this one. There are hints at toffee and chicory with far off dark fruits, maybe raisins. Musty, earthy undertones round things out. It's a little metallic at first impression, but that fades towards the end of the glass. Odell has nailed this style. This year's vintage comes in at 6.1%. From Dec 2006
Poured from 12oz bottle(best by 04072007) a deep amber with a large head of foam that subsides slowly leaving a solid fine layer with plenty of lacing.
The smell is one the faint side but I note some sweet malt and some fruitiness.
The taste is quite malty. I can taste some sweet caramel and fresh baked bread up front with just a touch of lemon bitterness from the hops and an even smaller hint of spice in the finsh making for a dry aftertaste.
After a few more sips and as the ale gets closer to room temp, the spice does grow more prominent but it doesn't take over the flavour as I've noticed in other samples of the style. Good stuff!
Bottom line: This is an example of the style that may not be as complex as others but it's a darn good, smooth drinker that is worthy of your patronage. I recommend it. dfinney23 (3424) - Houston, Texas, USA - FEB 9, 2017
