Odell is the it brewery as of late. They are prolific, putting a new brew every day. The Lugene is a good brew. Chocolaty aroma. Soft head. Foamy and frothy. Sweet. Maybe a bit too rich. It needs more bitterness to balance the chocolate. Overall a good brew. MetalNHopHead (1886) - Lincoln, Nebraska, USA - MAY 7, 2014
UPDATED: AUG 7, 2016 Odell’s crafted something amazing with Lugene. It may be the ultimate dessert beer. While I wanted this a beer to be just a bit headier, the black color is phenomenal. Lugene smells like rich malt, spicy cocoa, and booze. However, you won’t find any of the latter in the flavor. I was astounded to learn that this stout had an of ABV 8.5%. You don’t notice the alcohol until it warms your stomach. The flavors are just unreal. It starts with spicy cocoa, roasted malt , and dark chocolate, then finishes with milk chocolate, and last of all, chocolate milk. Yes, milk chocolate and chocolate milk are mutually exclusive. It has to be tasted to be believed. The sweetness sticks to the palate and the roof of the mouth. Lugene has a fantastically creamy mouthfeel, though I did find the carbonation to be a bit strong. Bested only by Samuel Smith’s Organic Chocolate Stout, Lugene is an exceptional treat.
