What a pillowy head that lingers. Strong malt aroma with sprucey hop notes as well. This is the perfect black double ipa. Strong hop character with a huge malt backbone. brettcassel (5) - Texas, USA - OCT 27, 2013 does not count
Not sure if I have tasted anything like this. Completely unique. Not highly drinkable but just so unique. ajd413 (18) - Colorado, USA - JAN 2, 2011
Odell’s nailed it with this one! They truly perfected the most popular style of the year in this beer. Beautiful aroma draws you in. Great balance between big hop flavor and dark roasted malt. Alcohol is well masked and I had no problem finishing the 750ml bottle. Great logo and package too! jessekratina (12) - Kansas, USA - OCT 19, 2013
coffee, roasty, resin, caramel, vanilla, woody, a clean bitterness, earthy, minimal head, brown foam, black, clear, light sweetness, medium bitterness, lightly sour, umami, full body, thick feel, soft carbonation, bitter, budznsudz (582) - Audubon, New Jersey, USA - JUN 15, 2012
As far as Black ipa’s go, this is the pinnacle. It pours deep brown/black with very little head but a fair amount of lacing nonetheless. The smell is roasted grain, light citrus, and caramelized sugar. The taste is brilliant. There’s a beautiful porter like depth balanced with crisp refreshing hops that come together like magic. Until I find a superior black ipa, this one will remain an almost perfect score for me.

Citrus, pine, and floral hop aroma is very prominent. Interesting take on black IPAs and making it an imperial black IPA. Well balanced and now one of my favorite beers.

Incredible black ipa. I received this beer via a beer trade and they guy stated it was one of his staples. Very different from any other black ipa I ever had. Malty and well balanced. Very tasty. commonmac (1245) - Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA - NOV 2, 2013
Tap pour at Town Hall Lanes. A questionable glass holding a wonderful, nearly perfect beer. A roasted malty ale leads but coupled by a compliment of hops. Just a great beer that showcases taste, mouthfeel, aftertaste, and perfection. Please go out and order this one! MetalNHopHead (1976) - Lincoln, Nebraska, USA - NOV 11, 2014
Odell is one of my longtime favorite breweries and the Black IPA style is quickly becoming one of my most sought-after styles. So it’s no great surprise to find that I really liked this beer. A lot. Let me start off by saying that the bottle art is insanely cool. Yes, I love most of Odell’s art, but this design deserves special recognition. The appearance of this brew is a work of art in its own right. This ale has a definitive shade of black that reveals some brown and mahogany color when held up to light. Head is a gorgeous toasted marshmallow color with a clean look and smooth surface. The aroma reveals fresh roasted coffee sensations and some sweet booze from the 9.5% ABV. Flavor is exceptionally balanced. The coffee and hop dynamics are almost at a perfect equilibrium. Palate is flawless. It’s sleek going down and leaves behind a boozy bitterness that gets caked onto everything. While Mountain Standard doesn’t dethrone Stone’s Sublimely Self-Righteous Ale as my favorite Black IPA, it’s quite possibly the smoothest Black IPA I’ve had. It’s the most beautiful by far. t8dd (46) - Mascoutah, Illinois, USA - JAN 29, 2013
Dark black. Near perfect balance of bitterness, malt and hop fruit. Damn good beer.
