Inspired by a resurrected style from the Flemish region of Belgium, The Meddler Oud Bruin is a blend of several generations of brown ales that were barrel aged for over 18 months. Wild yeasts, Lactobacillus, and Brettanomyces meddle with the beer creating complexity and depth of flavor. Intricate, yet balanced, The Meddler has an 8.9% ABV.

A really dark pour, looks black to me, with a 1 finger head of foam with some great lacing. I get a big fruity tartness on first smell, second smell..some hints of chocolate and vanilla. Blimey, the label mentions the latter 2. Fruity/vinegar sourness and vanilla up front in the taste. Some sugary sweetness mixed in there that is nice but confuses my palate somewhat. It finishes sour and gives me a blast of the alcohol. On the upper end of medium bodied with lively carbonation, its a good mouthfeel here and is pretty drinkable. I think this is a very good take of, based on my limited experience with, the style. Its surely worth a try.

Pours a rich dark brown with some deep red notes from a bottle. Rich winey aroma, mixed with oak, toffee, a little coffee? Flavor adds a leatheriness almost like Worcestershire sauce but more in quality than actual flavor. Pretty good beer.

Bottle in Austin. Pours a nice mohagony with a light head. Well carbonated. Aroma is leather, tobacco, funk and sour cherries. Taste is dark fruit, oak, toffee, red wine/tannins and balsalmico. Quite traditional and not too sweet. Very enjoyable and true to the style.

As Oud Bruins go, The Meddler is downright pretty. It pours ruby red. The head is fizzy but lasts longer than what you see on a lot of Sours. Earthy/acidic aromatics with barnyard, old oak, aged fruit, and a little malt. Palate is lively with tartness and funkiness. Raspberry, cherry, and apple notes with vinous wood and tannins. Some caramel malt and vinegar-like acidity. This tastes about as close to tradition as you can get.

Not my favorite style of beer but I can appreciate it for what it is. Pours a deep reddish brown, slightly watered down mouthfeel but strong malt and sour cherry notes.

Aroma is the best part here, with fruit caramel malt vinegar yeast. Appearances average with a small short-lived can head no lace and very dark Garnet. Flavor is a little bit like nose but mainly just sour. Long tart finish.

Great balance of sour funky aged elements and complex yeasty brown malts. A big beer on the palate, with a lot going on: cherries, old stone fruit, raisins, barnyard and heat from the alcohol.

750mL bottle, pours a deep dark reddish brown with a small white head. Aroma brings out Worcestershire sauce, balsamic, acidity and wood. Flavour brings out lots of tannins and red wine barrels, followed by some balsamic, a touch of sweetness and light acidity. Very tannic and earthy. Unusual and doesnt really come together.
