Doug Odells admiration for the British brewing culture has led him across the pond - a lot. In 2008, Doug landed at Thornbridge Brewery and in the company of kindred brewing spirits. This visit led to a collaboration brew at Thornbridge in 2010. Fast forward to 2012 to find the two breweries at it again, this time at Odell Brewing. Pond Hopper Double Extra Pale Ale is the love child of this international brewmance. Brewed with English malts and American hops, Pond Hopper brings together the best ingredients each country has to offer, balancing a subtle sweet malt character with hints of mango and peach hop flavor. It pours a rich golden color with citrus and ripe melon essence in the nose. No matter which side of the pond youre on, heres to good beer and good friends. Cheers.

Bottle. Pours golden with a white head. Slightly grassy hop aroma, some hay, also come citrus and caramel, slightly musty. Taste has more of the same, well balanced flavors. Quite fizzy, with a moderate bitterness. Pretty good but perhaps verges on the boring

750ml C&C bottle from discount liquors
Appearance: Pours hazy golden with a medium sized off-white head and some lacing
Aroma: Dusty caramel and pine
Taste: Dusty caramel, grapefruit, piney (green hops) with a dry/sweet finish
It was OK but hard to finish. Sweet and hoppy, not really balanced.

750ml, caged and corked bottle. Lucky I was watching the cork as I was opening. As soon as I got the cage off, I saw the cork rising up by itself. Sure enough, a very loud pop and the cork goes flying across the room. Thankfully, no gusher. Golden in color with an off white head. Aromas of citrus, floral, pine, grass, some tropical fruitiness. Tastes of citrus, tropical fruits, caramel, and lighter floral hops. Juicy with a sweeter fruit finish.

Keg at CPK, London. Pours clear, shiney gold with a moderate, creamy off-white head. Massive resinous, ripe citrus nose with grapefruit and tangerine. hugely sweet flavor with lots of jammy citrus, marmalade, orange, tangerine, grapefruit, melon, canteloupe, light pine and pale, bready malts. Medium to full bodied with fine to average carbonation. Good body, though, and not too heavy. Mild warmth to finish, with some slightly earhtier and grassier hops now, along with some very lightly toasted pale malts, ripe citrus, mild alcohol, orange, tangerine, pineapple, some light straw. Super sweet fruit character overall. Nice. It isnt overly sweet or aggressively bitter. Pretty solid DIPA.

Bottle to a tulip glass. In commemoration of watching the Olympic opening ceremony. Pours a slightly hazy, deep orange color w/ a soapy white head. Nice smells of pink grapefruit, nectarine, some alcohol. Flavors of more citrus, peach, pine. Towards the end, I get almost an orange-creamsicle note. Mostly fruity while maintaining a good, bitter bite. A little over-carbonated would be my only complaint. A nice beer!

750 caged. Hazy copper like appearance, with long head retention. Grassy, pine scents mixed with orange blossoms. A well balanced sweet malt and citrus like hop flavor. Tastes of earth and appetizing orange honey preserves. Full body. Nice refreshing change from all the N.W. style DIPAs. Necter like finish with some burn and a slight bitterness. Overall a little pricey for a beer I would like to enjoy more often.

750mL at Woodshop 7. Pours a full haze golden with medium white foam. Nose is floral, spicy, white peppercorn. Taste is boozy, sugary, melon heavy. Loads of cantaloupe sucked in rum or vodka. Thick and dense. Alcohol shows through.

10 oz goblet draft at Martin City Brewing Company in Kansas City, Missouri. The pour is an orange copper, lightly hazed, with a small white head. The aroma is citrus tropical (peach, mango, papaya) hops, caramel malt, nice aroma, just somewhat faint. The taste is sharp citrus peach orange hop, balanced with caramel, tea flavor crystal malt along with a touch of alcohol heat in the back. The flavor lingers with some soft dirtiness, then dries out with some light alcohol heat. The palate is medium bodied, soft carbonation, and the heat in finish picks up as it warms. I really like both these breweries, fun to try a collaboration.

UPDATED: JUL 21, 2012 Pours to good head and great lacing. Cloudy light orange. Smell: floral bouquet, but slight dirt element. Taste: good sweet malts, some hops (not as much as I was expecting from a DIPA), lemon citrus element, and again a little regrettable dirt. Balanced beer - not a bomb - but doesnt really stand out, and there is that one off-taste flaw. Yet to have anything really great by Odell - their St. Lupulin APA has come the closest. RE-RATE: Had this sit in the fridge for another day, and the grapefruit aroma and balanced flavors came out even more. Bumping up from 3.4 to 3.7 overall. NICE stuff. Earthiness gone!
