Doug Odell’s admiration for the British brewing culture has led him across the pond - a lot. In 2008, Doug landed at Thornbridge Brewery and in the company of kindred brewing spirits. This visit led to a collaboration brew at Thornbridge in 2010. Fast forward to 2012 to find the two breweries at it again, this time at Odell Brewing. Pond Hopper Double Extra Pale Ale is the love child of this international brewmance. Brewed with English malts and American hops, Pond Hopper brings together the best ingredients each country has to offer, balancing a subtle sweet malt character with hints of mango and peach hop flavor. It pours a rich golden color with citrus and ripe melon essence in the nose. No matter which side of the pond you’re on, here’s to good beer and good friends. Cheers.

Keg at White Horse. It pours deep orange-amber, with a thin white head. The nose is orange, mango, oily hope, juicy fruit and jam. The taste is orange, marmalade, oily hop, Irn Bru, leaf, tanginess, jam, hay and lingering alcohol warmth, with a tangy, bitter finish,. Medium body, prickly carbonation and slightly sticky mouth-feel as it warms up. Good balance and flavour. Nice.

750 ml bottle. Pours bright amber with a tight white foamy head that dissipates to a spotty film and lacing. Aroma is strong resinous piny hops and malt. Taste is more bitter resinous hops that show pine and spruce and a spicy note with a sweet malty finish. Palate is full slick and sticky with a dry finish. Tasty beer!

Pour on tap at Odell Small Batch Festival 2012, hazy orange with white head pour. Aroma brought notes of caramel, toffee, nice pine, citrus notes with a lot of resin, some biting spice and earthy tones come through as well. Taste is fairly nice mix of earthy spice, some bitter pine and resin, grass with some sweet grapefruit, finishing with some caramel and toffee, fairly dry.

This stuff is amazing! Beautiful raw honey pour with ample carbonation and a fluffy eggshell head with sticky lacing. Can sit a quarter on it. Eventually diminishes to a whisp and fizzy film. Aroma of Spruce, Ponderosa, and Douglas Fir...tons of evergreen. Loads of caramel, toffee, tropical fruit, and spice. Mango, papaya, and guava...fruit cocktail syrup and alcohol in flavor but the ABV isn’t distracting. Again, lots of peppery spice. Medium to thick mouthfeel. A little thick. Tasty! Another winner from Odell’s!

750ml bottle. Pours an apricot color with a fluffy eggshell head that leaves some sticky lacing. Aroma has some dank hops, citrus, green mango. Taste is sweet with super juicy hops. Medium bodied and a bitter, but balanced finish. A touch of dryness as well. This beer hides the high abv very well as you take a sip, but it begins to warmth the chest so you know its there. Really well done. And, just when I had all but given up hope for Odell’s. The biggest drawback: As usual, the price.

RSRIZZO (1986) - Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA - JUL 1, 2012
750ml corked and caged bottle poured into a Snifter at 45°. Color is a light gold with easy carbonation and a fluffy white head. Aroma is a fresh sweet fruity hop scent. It has a bolder medium body with a rich mouth feel. Flavor is rich, malty and has a nice fruity sweetness then a touch of pine shows with a bold bitterness. In the after taste all the flavors hang on with the pine standing out, a little more bitterness and a some alcohol showing. Overall it very well done, its big and bold without being overdone.

Keg @ Sheffield Tap. Dangerously drinkable. Warming with alcohol, slightly syrupy. Quite a lot of sweetness and malt balancing the hops and alcohol. Great way to end a day touring the pubs of Sheffield.

Poured from tap at Sheffield Rail Station, England. To start with, this place has an amazing bottle list with many beers from the United States that I can’t even get a hold of. Has a string malt character with enough hops to come through. Not an American IPA but certainly not a light hopped English IPA either. Great change from drinking normal English IPAs all week. Time to catch the train!

At Flanny’s for the Odell Tap Takeover. Clear and golden pour, thin white head. Nice balance of English malts and hoppiness..a little melon flavor as well. Very enjoyable.
