3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle. Black beer. Dry from the oak with some vanilla. High alcohol is noticeabl. Heavy roast. A hint of sourness. Some red wine. A little oxidation but it works in this beer.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle @ home via my rotbox. Pours a black appearance with a hefty, deep brown head. The aroma has a ton of oak, tannins / leather, coconut / vanilla, roast, and woody herbal notes. Thick creamy mouthfeel. Moderate high sweetness and moderate bitterness. Quite a bit of booze though it doesn’t burn on the finish. Flavor has coffee, lots of chocolate, heavy oak, tons of vanilla, and a little leather. The oak is incredibly strong - too strong in my mind - but the beer isn’t all that bad. Definitely not worth $20-30 like all of the Woodcut releases.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle No. 02503-13; Sampled July 2014
A steady, not quite vigorous, pour into my teku glass produces a tightly beaded, dense, brown tinged, dirty tan colored head. The beer is simply black in color and quite opaque. Up front the nose is a complex mix of toasted oak, vanillin, roasted coffee, and dark malt aromatics. The aroma is actually quite complex and interesting; toasted sweet-coconut, smoothly roasted coffee, hints of burnt brandy, richly toasted / roasted whole-grain brown bread, lots of buttery oak character, rich toasted cocoa notes, toasted tobacco.
Slightly sweet up front, but the oak seems to accentuate some of the sweetness towards the finish where it brings out a dark chocolate like note. The finish has woody oak flavors to it as well as a bit of oak-derives spiciness. Flavors of vanillin and buttery oak meld in the middle of this beer and help to play up the dark chocolate notes, which in turn melds well with a dark, smooth coffee like note. Roasted notes dominate the finish at times, but manage to stay quite smooth and not overly astringent or bitter; lots of toasted / roasted whole grain character, as well as a smooth, smoky, complex, dark malt character that is accentuated by the oak flavors. The body of this beer is nice and rich, not at all cloying, with a body and viscosity that is quite appropriate for an Imperial Stout; though it might not be as heavy as one expects from a brew of this strength, which is certainly a good thing.
This is a nice Imperial Stout; it stands up well to the oak treatment and allows the oak notes to meld in with the rest of the flavors such that it adds to the complexity rather than dominates the profile of this beer.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle (750 ml). From Marcus, thanks! Bottled in 2013.
Appearance: Pitch black with medium easy to revive beige head and some lacing.
Aroma: Roasted malts, chocolate, vegetal notes, quite a bit of oak, boozy notes... it feels a bit old.
Taste: Medium sweetness. Brighter (or at least less old) than the aroma, coffee roastiness, mild acidic presence, chocolate, vegetal notes, alcohol and light coffee bitterness.
Palate: Full body. Medium carbonation. Roasty finish. Vegetal aftertaste.
Overall: Not bad at all, but it’s either a bit too old or it was too vegetal to start. Taste is well balanced though. It’s a bit boozy, but normal considering the abv. Average RIS.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
