Aroma - Nutty and malty, fresh cooked bread, milk chocolate, hint of fruit. Different, that’s for sure. I’d give this an 8 if the aroma was amped up a bit more.
Appearance - Dark brown on the pour. Held up to light, the amber red comes through a bit more, but still very dark. Small light tan head that dissipated pretty quickly. Good amount of sticky lacing on the glass though.
Taste - Nutty flavor up front with a very nice roasted malt taste, dark fruit, toasted oats, slightly buscuity, creamy. The hops, (or is that hemp), comes through very well. A lot heavier tasting than most other black ales I’ve had. If I didn’t know better, I’d swear this was a porter.
Palate - Very creamy with low carbonation. Like I just said, a lot heavier than most other ales. Definitely feels more like a porter.
Overall - Easy to drink and strong on taste! Probably the heaviest ale I’ve ever had. I’m a big porter fan, so this one is right up my alley. Definitely worth a try for the porter and stout fans! Chudwick (3237) - Taylor Mill, Kentucky, USA - JUL 10, 2012
12oz bottle - pours black with beige head and thin lacing. Nose is oaty and roasty. flavor adds grain and cough drop. Taste is a little bitter and somewhat sweet. Medium body. Not my style. gregwilsonstl (2525) - St. Louis, Missouri, USA - JUL 7, 2012
Solid black. Very thin tan head. Tastes like marble bread. Not much taste, but smooth for how dark and bready asit is. Would be amazing with smoke or oats. jzzbassman (1638) - Arlington, Texas, USA - JUL 4, 2012
Bottle. Pours nearly black with a small tan head. Bitter somewhat herbal nose. Pleasant toasted flavor, except for a hit of something like licorice in the end that was somewhat off-putting. Itzjerm (2947) - Taft, Tennessee, USA - JUN 13, 2012
Sweet sorghum licorices smell. Pitch black thin head from bottle. Taste is a bitter sweet sorghum strong flavor. Thick body. Weird flavor if anyone likes molasses it would be an awesome beer.

Pours a deep brown with a short tan head and lacing. The aroma is faint, with some malt and caramel and a small amount of coffee. The flavor is sweet, with caramel and coffee up front and a long, sweet aftertaste.

Bottle pours reddish dark brown with tan head. Smells of very lightly roasted malt. The taste is smooth and grainy, with a nutty finish. There is some fruit in it but all minimal, apple and a tangerine bitter with a seed and dry roasted nut twist in the finish. The carbonation is healthy but light enough it goes down quickly. I see moderate scores for this but I really enjoy this beer and look forward to it as a great seasonal brew. It really has a lot to offer in a low key way, no big pow of flavors, just a simple beer done very well. JoeinDahlem (1555) - Berlin, GERMANY - MAY 10, 2012
Sampled at Great Taste ’11. A nutty, roasty black beer with firm bitterness. Went down quite easy but plenty of character here. Hope to find it again. milewide (2260) - Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA - APR 10, 2012
Excellent brew that should be year-around! Clear black color. Above average head. Very unique flavor is a bit spicy and sweet. Enough hops to provide balance. fiveacestx (970) - Texas, USA - APR 1, 2012
Bottle - jet black with a medium brown head. Had a nice rich coffee flavor to it, medium body and an oily mouthfeel. Better than I expected.
