Black as a cold winter night, this beer was designed to fit the season instead of conforming to the rules of any style category. The unique blend of seemingly enless ingredients include: toasted hemp seeds, oats, malted rye, wheat, Amarillo and Citrahops and a Belgian yeast strain. Don’t be afraid of the myriad of flavors in the balanced black ale as it is deceivingly soft and sessionable especially during the dark days of winter.

12 ounce bottle. Served in a nonic pint glass, the beer pours dark brown with about a half inch tan head. The head went away kinda quickly, and there’s a good amount of of lacing left behind on the glass. Aroma is roasted malt, nuts, chocolate, grain and piney hops. Taste is similar to the aroma, it tastes like roasted and burnt/charred malt, nuts, pine hops and some bittersweet chocolate. Mouthfeel/body is medium, it’s smooth and a bit sticky. Medium/high carbonation, and it’s easy enough to drink. It’s a good overall beer, I enjoyed it. It wouldn’t be hard to drink a few of these at a time.

Pour is a deep black with a shallow light tan head. Aroma is roasty and chocolaty with a flavor that is again roasted malt with some chocolate. The hemp seed is very different and hard to compare. A very good brew and very drinkable.

Maybe mine is off. Pours black, small head. Hoppy, malty aroma. Taste is very sour, with hop bitterness. Not very pleasant at all.

Pours dark brown with some amber highlights and an off whit head. Aroma is hoppy, roast malt, spicy. Flavor is earthy, light roast, spicy notes, with a good bit of hop bitterness.

Nearly perfectly black colored body with a little bit of mahogany red at the edges when held to light. There is a light khaki head on top. The nose has anise and must. There is also a little bit of walnuts and black tea. The taste is black tea with some anise. There is also some walnuts and a little bit of bread dough. Nicely made.

Bottle. Poured a jet black color with a tiny brownish head that was gone as soon as the beer was poured. Aroma was earthy, some caramel, and citrus mixed in. Flavor was herbs, pine and some grass/leaves. Aftertaste was mild bitters. Medium body. Oily and sticky aftertaste. All in all a decent beer.

12 oz bottle from Archers. Poured a dark thin black with little to no head. Smell like roasted carmel malts and lite hops. Taste is similar, thought this could have been a Schwarzbier, lots of similar charachteristics of one. Overall a pretty decent brew.

Pours a deep chestnut brown with a big semi-loose head. The aroma is fruity and earthy with a nice bright hoppiness. The aroma is big up front but doesn’t work in a whole lot of complexity. The flavor is bitter, really quite bitter. There is some nice burnt toast going on here witch matches oddly well with perfectly cooked toast. There are some fruity hops in there as well. An interesting beer, and much better than the amber colored hemp beer they made.

12 ounce from HyVee. Big black body. Pours a big head that fades. Strong hop aroma but not in the body. As someone else here wrote, not so much a black IPA but a black pale ale. Drinkable.

Pour is a black with a small tan head. Aroma is roasty and chocolate. Flavor is again roasted malt with some chocolate with some odd spice at the end which i guess is the hemp seed but I’ve never had a hemp seed in my life to compare it to. Odd in a good way and quite drinkable.
