Scarce, subtle and complex, Thomas Hardy’s Ale is the beer enthusiast’s equivalent of rare cognac. Bottle-conditioned to mature in the bottle like fine wine, this old ale/barley wine will improve with age for at least 26 years (and we’re still counting!). Not for the faint of palate, especially when young and brash, maturity brings an elegance of flavors unmatched by any other beer—if you have the patience to cellar it for at least a decade.

Bottle number 58803, from 2007 Clear Mahogany with no head. Aroma vinous, raisin, sherry, dark fruit, molasses, plums, rich caramel, notes of chocolate and bubblegum. Taste heavy, syrupy, and very sweet. No noticeable carbonation or bitterness. Soy notes, wood tannin, burnt sugar, alcoholic palate. This thing is heavy. It is rich, and full, and should be drank very slowly, preferably in the dead of winter, with a couple of friends.

Bouteille 2004. [notes 2005]

2003 Vintage, from a trade with Alex (beermack) and shared with tbub18 in Brooklyn at a bottle share. There was a lot of malt flavor -- think caramel, syrup, and a bit of bread -- like you’d expect for a nearly 12% Old Ale, but there was a heavy amount of oxidization as well after 12 years. It had taken on a distinctly vinous and sweet "Port" flavor, and while it was interesting and distinctive, it also was a bit tangy, oxidized, and even slightly cloying.

2004 vintage. Pours a lifeless dark ruby with no head and thus no lacing. Nose is of intense caramel, molasses and madeira. While I say madeira it is surprisingly not too oxidized for such an old brew. Taste is moderately sweet and offers caramel, tobacco, oxidized alcohol. Body is medium-full and carbonation nil. The once hot (I’m guessing) alcohol is now really subtle and appreciated. Quite an experience for sure! Held up better than I expected and I would be really curious to try an older sample now!

Bottle @ home. Vintage 2007. Hazy red/brown colour, no foam. Vinous, port, plums, brown sugar. Some oxidation. Sweet and weak. Hard to beleive this is 11.7%. Good but I think the best of this beer is already gone.

Flaske. Smager fantastisk.

Brown beer, no head. Nose is fruity, very spicy and malty, bready, dark fruits, almost like a boozy christmas pudding. Flavor is caramel, dark fruits, lots of bready malt, licorice notes, dried fruits, warm booze. Licorice, fruity, bready finish, dark fruit... This is amazing.
