"Renamed? Bavarian black lager. Pretty nice brew. Mellow toasted chocolate malts and a hint of coffee. Light yet pretty flavorful with a dry sweet finish. Not bad..." maltman53 (472) - Corrales, New Mexico, USA - OCT 7, 2013
On tap at the brewhouse, this malty, earthy lager is a nice version of a Schwarzbier. Pours coffee black, nice tan head, medium-bodied, low-alcohol (3.4 ABV), this is a black beer low-alcohol drinkers need not fear. marcus (10222) - Sacramento, California, USA - MAY 30, 2013
On tap at Capitol Beer, Sacramento. Pours, yes, black with a nice tan head and a treacle and citrus aroma. There is a smooth sweet malty flavor with a dry finish. Nicely balanced with a lot of flavor. Oscbert (1302) - Lincoln, California, USA - JAN 29, 2013
~Roasty, toasty, bready malt, light coffee like roastiness, slightly sweet in aroma.
~Pours black with small white disappearing head.
~Light roasty, bready, and coffee flavor.
~Medium light bodied, medium CO2, clean roasty finish.
~Great Schwarzbier! Low alcohol and wonderfully flavorful.

Draft at the brewery. Light black-brownish pour, off-white head. Chocolate sweetness, a bit of smoke, earth, and light roasted coffee. A light beer, but nice flavor for the low abv. Nice.

On draft at the brewhouse. Pours a very deep brown with garnet highlights. Taupe head layers nicely over the top and remains. Lots of great roasted coffee on the aroma. Taste is also great coffee and roast with a crisp, very dry finish. Bitterness shows its head at the end in an elegant manner. As was repeated later with the sampler, this may be the best beer in this style i have ever had. savnac (2391) - Anchorage, Alaska, USA - SEP 2, 2012
Draft @ Ol Republic. Deep brown with a small light tan head. Aroma of coffee, bread and some spicy noble hops. Flavor is bready malt, some roasted coffee and a light, clean hop bitterness. Medium to light body with average carbonation. Great beer for such a low abv, lots of flavor and very drinkable. skoisirius (1909) - Earth, Washington, USA - AUG 31, 2012
Growler from the brewery. Pours a thick black with brown tones and a lighter tanned head. Flowery aroma which was kind of a surprise, but it’s nice. Blends with the sweet malt hints well. Grainy sweet body with lovely cocoa powder and roast hints towards the silky smooth finish. Lightly hopped finish. It’s only 3.8% ABV, but there’s still a lot to chew on here. Very sessionable as well! This is still a simple beer, but done incredibly proper! Possibly one of the better ones I’ve had from Ol’ Republic...great beer!! bigabe (194) - California, USA - MAR 22, 2012
Incredible session beer. The session beer of the gods. Huge malt aroma and taste. Incredible depth of flavor for any style... let alone a 3.4%ABV brew. I love it. bhensonb (15191) - Woodland, California, USA - FEB 25, 2012
Tap at Sacramento Brewers Showcase. Pours brown/black with beige bubbles. Aroma is lightly smokey and chocolate. Med body. Flavor is chocolate, earthy dark malt and something I can’t pin down that is very nice. Finishes balanced.
