3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
2012-08-18. Black body with a small tan head. 3+ Lightly roasty character throughout, fruity, bitter, muted sweet malt middle, dry bitter roasty finish. 7+ Dry roasty malt in the aroma. 7+ Medium bodied palate. 3+ Simple solid stout, with decent amount of bitterness but I attributed it more to roast malt than hops... not nearly enough hops to call this a black IPA in my opinion. On tap, Old Forge brewpub
Draft at the source. Pretty much black color, beige head with good retention and solid lacing. Aroma of pine boughs dipped in coffee. Taste is bitter espresso and pine. Very nice. argo0 (14127) - Washington DC, USA - AUG 15, 2015

Sampled at the brewery. Nice roast aroma, light barley, chocolate, spicy hops. Dark brown-black clear with creamy tan lacing head. Medium body with medium carbonation. On tap at The Grey Lodge. Pours a black color with a dark tan head that falls to a cap with decent retention and leaves spotty lace. Aroma has spicy and herbal hops up front with a burst of grassy hops, along with a light burnt aroma and fresh bread. Taste is earthy and spicy hops with notes of peppercorn and fresh grass are up front. Clean malt profile with some burnt and molasses notes and a touch of coffee. Light dark fruitiness also. Medium bodied with a modest amount of carbonation and dry finish.

Sixtel, at home. Pours a dark brown body with a one finger foamy light brown head that left some light lacing. The nose is bright with juicy citrusy hops over a Porter like malt base with coffee, light roast, chocolate, and a bit of dark wheat. The flavor walks the line really well between Porter and IPA. At various points I think it favors each of the two styles. It pleases both the ’Stoutie’ in me and the hophead. The coffee and dark chocolate linger nicely with a bit of resiny piney hops. Medium bodied with fizzy carbonation. I really like this beer, one of my most favorite beers from Old Forge to date. Liked it so much I bought a sixtel of it after I had a few pints at the brewpub. douglas88 (9632) - Portland, Oregon, USA - OCT 18, 2012
On tap at GABF 2012. Pours a totally black color with a medium grey head. A big smoky and meaty nose with some pine. The flavor is sweet roast, smoke, lingering bitterness. Pretty good. zdk (1917) - New York, New York, USA - SEP 18, 2012
Tap at OF with campground brewdown gang: Dark pour with a beige head. Nice citrus on the nose and roasted barley-ness. Cocoa, chocolate malts with a nice resinous bitter. Well balanced. DiarmaidBHK (5920) - Lewisburg, Pennsylvania, USA - AUG 30, 2012
Draft at brewpub. Pours black with an inch of khaki foam that doesn’t leave much foam. A bit of malt on the nose. More malt on the tongue with a fairly prominent pine flavor and corresponding bitterness on the finish. Solid but not my favorite style.
