Red wine like in appearance. Lots of carbonation in the head. Bourbon in the aroma and some sweet malts, but mostly bourbon. Rich sweet malts and bourbon in the flavor. If you like bourbon this is the beer for you. I do. Thick and coating on the palate. This is OHBs first bottled offering and they couldnt have picked a better beer to bottle.

Bottle courtesy of yourefragile at last nights barrel-aged barleywine tasting. Served in a SAVOR snifter. Pours a nice dark copper color with a thin light tan head that falls into a thin cap, eventually dispersing into a nice collar. Nose carries quite a bit of caramel to pair with the strong bourbon character. A bit of oak and toffee there as well, adding a bit of complexity. Flavor is a bit muted, though the bourbon comes through fairly well. Light booze underneath good bourbon. A touch of oak and toffee plus a good dosing of caramel. Medium body with low carbonation. Smooth, bourbon-filled finish. Glad to try this, though not one of the best of the night. Worth trying, but probably not something to really seek out.

22 ounce bottle from Bestway in Greensboro, NC, opened 7/9/11. 2007 vintage. Pours a hazy dark copper color with a thin tan fizzy head. Poor head retention and lacing. Aroma of bourbon, toffee, chocolate, citrus hops and wood. The taste is toffee, raisins, wood, bourbon, vanilla and a bitter finish. Medium bodied. Some booziness.

22 oz. bottle via trade with bobertkuekn- thanks again, Robert! Opened this up at Dark Lord Day 2011. 2007 vintage. Pours a cloudy chocolate brown color with some amber highlights and a small tan head. Big bourbon aroma, with notes of vanilla, caramel, toasted brown sugar, and raisins. Awesome nose if you like bourbon. Flavor tamps down the pop a little bit, with notes of bourbon, vanilla, caramel, chocolate, oak, toasted brown sugar, and nuts. Medium-bodied, with modest carbonation and a toasty mouthfeel that coats the palate late. Really fun bourbon barrel beer.

DLD11, thanks to phaleslu for this one! Dark brown, hazy pour with thin off white slightly yellow head. Aroma has big notes of bourbon and vanilla but the sweet part of those, with notes of some candied dark fruit and sweet chocolate, lots of toffee and burnt caramel. Taste is sweet toffee, vanilla, bourbon notes, some slight oak and burnt sugars, some nice chocolate hints finishing sweet and drying. No sign of the 10%. Delicious brew, seems more like a bourbon brown than a barley wine...but overall good stuff.

I split the bottle with a few friends into snifters. I was greeted with a nice two finger off white head sitting on top of an amber body brew. There was a slight oxidized aroma coming thru in the nose I chalk it up to age even though the bottle was waxed. (so drink them if you got them) you still are getting a nice bourbon vanilla note from the barrel and of coarse you great sweet caramel from the malts. The flavor is the same as the nose only in reverse. You first get the sweetness followed up with a good vanilla bourbon note. The mouth feel is thick and syrupy so it translates into a great sipping drink. Overall I enjoyed this brew and would love to revisit it again. Serving type: bottle

A-pours a dark red, slightly cloudy liquid with a light tan head, very little of it and somewhat thin. S-nice nose, caramel malts, notes of candied sugars, oak, and vanilla towards the back. T-the oak and caramel dominate the flavor, it starts to fall apart as burnt sugars seem to flutter around. there is a light note of sweet dark fruits towards the back with a more concetrated approach but messy and oak dominated. M-medium body with a messy grainy feel, overly carbonated and a messy finish. D-rough messy malts and non integrated barrel flavors. the nose outshined the flavor and got my hopes up for a let down.

Transparent tan, thin white ring for a head. Cookie and wood, light malt. Flavor is more alcohol, strong, dry wood. Sticky, low carbonation, large and smooth. Decent beer.

Cloudy amber with a small off-white head. The aroma has grainy malt, some dusty herbal notes and coconut and other bourbon notes. Sweet and cloying boozy flavour with lots of bourbon

Bomber thanks to mikeincharleston. Pours a hazy reddish-amber color with a one-finger off-white head. Great aroma, with big caramel notes as well as sweet toffee, sherry, oak, and faded hops. The flavor is nice. I heard this was the "Wooden Hell of the south" and while it falls a bit short, its damn tasty. Fairly oaky with caramel and toffee malt notes as well as slight red berries and slight coconut. Very dry and a little tannic with medium-plus body. A great -bal aged barleywine, surprisingly good. Best southern barleywine Ive ever had probably.
